The Computer

A computer can be defined as an electronic device which accepts data as


input, processes the data to produce information, under the direction of
detailed step-by-step instructions called programs.

Constituents of a computer
The constituents of a computer can be divided into two broad categories
namely hardware and software. All the parts of a computer that can be
physically touched are called hardware. For example
PC case (system unit)
Power supply unit
Motherboard
Hard disk drive
Floppy disk drive
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse speakers

Computer Software
Computer software is a set of instructions (programs) that tell the
computer what to do hence enable the computer to perform specific
tasks.

Characteristics of computers
A computer has certain features that make them very useful to us.
The following are characteristics of a computer:

Speed
A computer can add, subtract multiply and divide numbers, and compare
numbers and process other forms of data very quickly (billions of
operations in one second).

Accuracy
Computers perform operations with high degree of accuracy. A computer
is not prone to making mistakes like humans. If for any reason it is the
output of a computer program is not as expected, it always turns out to
be a mistake on the part of the programmer or an error in the data
provided (Garbage in garbage out -GIGO)

Consistency
When the computer is supplied with the same set of input data, it will
always produce the same result, no matter how many times we try.

Diligence
Computers can work indefatigably (without ever getting tired) even for
weeks at a time

Versatility
The computer can perform basic set of fundamental operations, but
which when combined carefully with the ingenuity of the programmer can
perform a variety of complex innovative tasks

Programmability
The computer can operate on its own (without supervision) once it is
programmed. This makes it possible to perform tasks automatically

Storage
The computer can store a lot of data in a small area. For instance the data
of students in a big school which requires several cabinets of paper based
files, which can be stored on a small pen-drive.

Cost
Hardware cost has been decreasing at an estimated annual rate of 25% so
that small companies now find the use of computers feasible and cost
effective
