1. Tell us about yourself.

Sample answer:

“I am in the final year of my Bachelor in Hotel Management at XYZ Institute. During my coursework I
have specialised in Food & Beverage service and I completed a six-week industrial training in the
front-office department of ABC Hotel where I got hands-on exposure to guest check-in, billing, and
upselling room services. I am a strong communicator (English & Hindi), I enjoy interacting with
guests and I am committed to delivering exceptional service. I am particularly drawn to The Oberoi
Group because of its reputation for luxury, attention to guest experience and emphasis on employee
development.”

Remarks: It covers education, relevant experience, skills, and motivation for choosing Oberoi.

2. Why do you want to join The Oberoi Group?

Sample answer:

“I have always admired The Oberoi Group’s legacy of luxury hospitality, high service standards and
its culture of nurturing talent. As a final-year hotel management student, I want to begin my career
at an organisation known for premium service, global learning opportunities and internal growth. I
believe joining here will give me the right platform to learn, contribute and grow.”

Tip: Have one or two specific facts about Oberoi (for example their training programmes, reputation)
to show you’ve done your research

3. What are the main departments of a hotel and which one interests you the most (and why)?

Sample answer:

“A full-service hotel typically has departments such as Front Office, Food & Beverage (service &
kitchen), Housekeeping, Engineering/Maintenance, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources and
Finance. Among these, I am most interested in Food & Beverage Service because I enjoy direct guest
interaction, I’m fascinated by service details (like table setting, menu knowledge, beverage pairing)
and during my training I found I perform well under the faster-paced environment of the
restaurant/service floor.”

Tip: Mention the department you’re applying to, and link to your strengths or past exposure.

4. What is your greatest strength and your biggest weakness?

Sample answer (strength):

“One of my greatest strengths is my communication and interpersonal skills — I can interact

confidently with guests, team members and superiors. For example, during my internship I often
helped guests with special requests and received appreciation from my supervisor for going the
extra mile.

(weakness): I used to find time-management challenging when multiple guest requests came
simultaneously. To overcome this, I started maintaining a priority list at the start of each shift and
liaised proactively with team members so tasks were distributed. Over the past few months I’ve
improved significantly in this area.”

Tip: For the weakness, pick a real but manageable one, and show how you are working to improve it.
5. Describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult guest (or situation) and how you handled it.

Sample answer:

“During my training in the front office of ABC Hotel, a guest arrived late and their room they had
booked was not ready due to an early checkout and housekeeping delay. The guest was visibly
upset. I apologised sincerely, offered them a refreshment while waiting, coordinated with
housekeeping to expedite the room cleaning and updated the guest regularly on progress. I also
arranged a complimentary upgrade to express my regret. The guest later thanked us for how we
handled the situation. This experience taught me the importance of empathy, communication and
prompt action in guest service.”

Tip: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Even if you don’t have a big story, draw
from any training or college project.

6. What do you know about luxury hotel service – what makes a hotel like Oberoi ‘luxury’?

Sample answer:

“A luxury hotel differentiates itself through attention to detail, personalised service, premium
facilities, consistent quality across guest touch-points and a strong brand reputation. Guests expect
not only the fundamentals (clean, comfortable rooms) but also warm hospitality, anticipatory
service, refined ambience, and memorable experiences. The Oberoi Group is known for its culture of
service excellence, high standards of grooming, training of associates and its emphasis on guest
loyalty.”

Tip: If you can reference a specific Oberoi value or programme it strengthens your answer.

7. How would you contribute to our hotel/team?

Sample answer:

“I bring fresh academic knowledge from my hotel management course combined with internship
exposure in real operations. I am enthusiastic to learn, adapt and take on guest-centric roles. I
believe I can contribute by maintaining high standards of service, being proactive in assisting guests
and team members, and by bringing a positive attitude. Since I have worked in fast-paced service
environments, I can handle pressure and help ensure guest satisfaction.”

Tip: Show your value and how you will fit in.

8. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Sample answer:

“In five years I see myself having grown through operational roles and perhaps leading a small team
in the Food & Beverage department or Front Office. I would like to specialise in luxury hospitality
and build my skills in guest relations, service management and possibly move into a supervisory or
departmental role within the Oberoi Group. I am committed to continuous learning and would value
internal training programmes to help me grow.”

Tip: Show ambition but within the company, not “I’ll leave in 1 year”.
9. Do you understand the importance of grooming and presentation in luxury hotels?

Sample answer:

“Yes – in a luxury hotel environment like Oberoi, grooming and presentation are key because the
associate is often the first point of contact with guests and contributes to the brand’s image. I ensure
that my uniform is impeccable, shoes polished, name tag clean, hair neat and communication clear. I
also believe in gestures like greeting guests warmly, maintaining eye contact, and always being
approachable. These small details reinforce the guest’s confidence in the brand.”

Tip: You can mention awareness of the group’s grooming standards (from reviews etc).

10. Do you have any questions for us?

Sample questions you can ask:

 “What training and development opportunities does The Oberoi Group offer for entry-level
associates?”
 “What does success look like for a trainee/intern in the first six months?”
 “Could you tell me more about the team and culture in this department?”

🏨 2. Front Office Department

6. What are the main functions of the Front Office?

Answer:

assignment, handling reservations, guest check-in and check-out, billing, guest assistance, and
coordination with other departments to ensure guest satisfaction.”

7. What qualities should a Front Office Associate have?

.Answer:

maintain eye contact, and create a welcoming first impression.”

8. What is the check-in and check-out process?

9. How would you handle a guest complaint at the Front Desk?

action to resolve it — such as informing housekeeping or maintenance if needed — and follow up
personally to ensure the guest is satisfied.”

10. What is upselling? Give an example.

Answer:

“Upselling means offering a higher category or additional service to enhance the guest experience
and increase revenue. For example, if a guest books a standard room, I could suggest upgrading to a
deluxe room with a better view for a small rate difference.”

🍽️3. Food & Beverage Service

11. What are the different types of food service?

Answer:

“Common types are:

Silver service – food served from the left using a spoon and fork.

Buffet service – self-service system.

Gueridon service – tableside preparation and service.”

12. How would you handle a guest who complains that their food is cold?

bringing it to my attention.”

13. What do you understand by “sequence of service”?

Answer:

“It refers to the correct and professional order in which service steps are performed — greeting,

correct sequence ensures smooth flow and guest comfort.”

14. What is the difference between red and white wine service?

during busy hours.”

🧺 4. Housekeeping Department

16. What is the role of housekeeping in a hotel?

Answer:

“Housekeeping ensures the cleanliness, order, and comfort of all guest and public areas. It directly

Answer:

Departure room: Guest has checked out but cleaning is pending.

Vacant clean room: Room is cleaned, inspected, and ready for the next check-in.

Polishes: for metal and wooden surfaces.”

20. Why is lost and found important?

Kitchen, and Pantry. Each section specializes in certain preparations for efficiency and quality.”
