Introduction
Badminton is more than just hitting a shuttlecock back and forth. It is a
racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing
pairs ( doubles) ,who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular count
divided by a net.
Players score points by striking a shuttle cock with their racquet so that it
passes over the net and lands in their opponent’s half of the court.
Each side may only strike the shuttle cock once before it passes over the net
and a rally ends once the shuttle cock has struck the floor, or if a fault has
been called by either the umpire or service judge.
Badminton has been an Olympic game since 1992 with five events namely;
Men’s and women’s singles,
Men’s and women’s doubles,
And mixed doubles in which each pair consists of a man and woman. During
the tournament at kyambogo university it was a men’s double tournament
where every shot, whether a delicate tap at the net or a powerful overhead
smash, serves a specific purpose in a rally and it was characterized by new
players who didn’t understand these shots and as a sports scientist l am
bridging the knowledge gap between those new players about the shots they
are supposed to use during a badminton game as in the table below.

Conclusively there fore, as you play in the inter-hall tournament,
remember that every shot is a conversation with your opponent.
You are not just hitting the shuttle; you are asking questions , for
example high serve and clear? You are asking for time and
space ,drop shot and hairpin? You are challenging their ability to
move quickly to the net , smash and drive? You are testing their
defenses and ending the point.
Focus on mastering the basic serves, clears, and drop shots first. Then, as you gain
confidence, incorporate the more deceptive and powerful shots. Most importantly,
practice your footwork to always return to your base position—the physical and
strategic center of your game. By understanding and applying these simple
principles, you can elevate your performance and enjoy the game at a deeper level.
