PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

ASSIGNMENT 1

Question 1

Six white balls and four black balls, which are indistinguishable apart from color, are placed in a bag. If
six balls are taken from the bag, find the probability of their being three white and three white and three
black.

Question 2

Four items are taken at random from a box of 12 items and inspected. The box is rejected if more than 1
item is found to be faulty. If there are 3 faulty items in the box, find the probability that the box is
accepted.

Question 3

Part (a)

If 12 eggs in a refrigerator, 2 are bad. From these, 4 eggs are chosen at random to make a cake. What
are the probabilities that: (1) exactly one is bad? (2) at least one is bad?

Part (b)

A certain carton of eggs has 3 bad eggs and 9 good eggs. An omelette is made of 3 eggs randomly
chosen from the carton. What is the probability that there are: (1) no bad egg? (2) at least one bad egg?
(3) exactly 2 bad eggs in the omelette?

Question 4

Part (a)

If 12 eggs in a refrigerator, 2 are bad. From these, 4 eggs are chosen at random to make a cake. What
are the probabilities that: (1) exactly one is good? (2) at least one is good?

Part (b)

A certain carton of eggs has 3 bad eggs and 9 good eggs. An omelette is made of 3 eggs randomly
chosen from the carton. What is the probability that there are: (1) no good egg? (2) at least one good
egg? (3) exactly 2 good eggs in the omelette?
Question 5

Part (a)

From a pack of 52 cards, two are drawn at random, find the probability that one is king and the other is
queen.

Part (b)

A set of Eight cards contains a joker. A and B are two players and A chooses 5 cards at random, B taking
the remaining 3 cards. What is the probability that A has the joker?

Question 6

What is the probability that a randomly selected poker hand, contains exactly 3 aces, given that it
contains at least 2 aces?
