Example Problem 9-2: Gear Train Power Flow & Force

Analysis

Given Data
Motor speed = 1500 rpm, Input power = 9 hp. Number of teeth: ZA=60, ZB=30, ZC=90, ZD=30, ZE=30. Diametral
pitch Pd = 8 teeth/in. Output power from shafts B, D, and E = 3 hp each.

Neat Power Flow Diagram (Exam Representation)

Motor → Gear A (1500 rpm, 9 hp)
↓ meshes with
Gear B (3000 rpm, 3 hp output at Shaft B)
■ same shaft
Gear C (3000 rpm, transmits 6 hp)
↓↓
Gear D (9000 rpm, 3 hp) Gear E (9000 rpm, 3 hp)

Gear Force Diagram Explanation

At each gear mesh, three forces act: Tangential force (Ft) transmits power, Radial force (Fr) acts along the line
joining gear centers and loads bearings, Normal force (Fn) acts along the line of action at the pressure angle.

Key Results Summary

Parameter Value
Speed of Gear A 1500 rpm
Speed of Gear B & C 3000 rpm
Speed of Gear D & E 9000 rpm
Torque at Shaft A 3782 lb·in
Torque at Shaft B 63 lb·in
Torque at Shafts D & E 21 lb·in
Tangential Force (A–B) 1008 lb
Tangential Force (C–D, C–E) 22.4 lb

These diagrams and results are presented in an exam-oriented format, suitable for Machine Design and Theory of
Machines examinations.
