Abstract

Bold the section header for APA 7th. Do not indent. The abstract should be between 150 and 250

words in length (though I will accept as few as 120 because we do not have as much material to

work with as the typical research study). Begin with some background on the topic and then

summarize each other section of your paper. Include goals, but you can combine hypotheses with

results to save space (As hypothesized….). Be concise and leave out unnecessary methodological

details and statistical values. Finish with interpretation and conclusions.

include them do so).

Your introduction, written here, should be five to six paragraphs and should

describe the scientific literature surrounding your topic (summarize and paraphrase), the

rationale, design and purpose of your study, as well as definitions/explanations of your variables

and your hypotheses. Write everything in the past tense.

Method

Participants or Subjects (choose one)

[This section should include information about the animals or people in your study and

how they were sampled. For human participants you should describe your sample with

descriptive statistics for age, gender, and any other relevant characteristics. For nonhuman

subjects include full common and Latin names. This section should also include sample size,

perhaps broken down by IV level.]

Materials

[This section should describe any materials used in the study (e.g. surveys, physiological

equipment, online programs, stimulus arrays, questionnaires, ethograms, headphones, etc…).]

Procedure

[In the Procedure section, you should list step by step how you conducted the research

study.] This may include durations, counterbalancing, blocks of trials, distribution method, etc.,

depending on the nature of your study.

Results

[The Results section includes the statistical results of your study. Many examples of how

to write results in APA format for most statistical tests can be found on the web. Be sure to

include all test results in narrative form and refer reader to figures and tables.]

Discussion

[The Discussion section is where you interpret your findings, saying why you think they

occurred based on earlier ideas in the introduction (this should make up most of the section).

Next, briefly link your results to those of other studies, and mention the limitations of your study

design, and provide future directions for other research studies. Finish with broader conclusions

that tie back to the opening of your introduction. This section should be four to five paragraphs.]
