Below you will find information on the admission requirements and

application steps for our English Master Programmes. Please read
them carefully before submitting your application.

Applications open yearly on October 15.

Application Checklist

Before starting your application, make sure you have gathered all
necessary documents and follow these important steps carefully. A
complete application consists of two parts: submitting your online application
and verifying your higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) from
all degrees you have obtained.

Please note that only complete applications will be considered, so it is

essential to follow these steps thoroughly for a successful submission.

Important Steps

 Stay informed: Read all provided information carefully to understand the

application process.
 Choose a programme: check the list of our English Master's programmes.
 Check the tuition fees: published yearly in December for the following
academic year.
 View deadlines: check the yearly closing dates for your chosen programme.
 Check admission requirements: make sure you meet the minimum
admission requirements, including language requirements.
 Complete the online application: Submit your application by the
programme deadline.
 Verify your documents: Ensure all obtained higher education diploma(s)
and transcript(s) can be verified via an accepted method.
 Scholarship applicants: Follow the specific application procedures for the
scholarship you are applying for.
 Chinese Citizens: Obtain an APS Academic Screening Certificate from the
Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in Beijing (required for
enrolment and visa). More information can be found on the APS website.
 Next Steps: the Admissions Office processes complete applications and
forwards them to the Admission Board for evaluation. You will receive
updates throughout the process.
 Follow up on your application: track the status of your application and
documents in the Application Portal. Be patient for the outcome.

When applying for one of those programmes, you'll have to choose a type of
study contract. Hasselt University has three types of study contracts:
diploma contract, credit contract and exam contract.

Moreover, there are scholarship opportunities available for international

students.

View the Deadlines

Each programme has a specific deadline, depending on where you are from.

 International (non-EEA) students often have to go through lengthy visa

procedures for which a proof of admission is required. The deadlines are thus
set earlier keeping this in mind.
 Students from the European Economic Area (EEA) have deadlines set a bit
later as the process of relocation is much faster.

If you are an international student already residing in the EEA

(including Belgium), you can follow the EEA application deadlines.

We therefore advise you to submit the application for the

programme of your choice by February 1.
This gives the Admission Board enough time to make a final decision on your
admission in order for you to proceed with the application for the Master
Mind Scholarship.

you are eligible.
Keep in mind that meeting the admission requirements does not
guarantee admission.
The Admission Board reserves the right to adjust the admission requirements
and the selection criteria every year.
Each programme has its own admission requirements.

Master of Interior Architecture

For who?

The international Master of Interior Architecture with focus on Adaptive

Reuse focuses on Bachelor's or Master's in Architecture and/or Interior
Architecture with a strong interest in adaptive reuse and the cultural aspects
of (interior) architecture in a broad sense.

Admission Requirements

Academic Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture and/or Interior

Architecture.

Must-have documents:

 Valid ID or Passport
 Curriculum Vitae (CV)
 Motivation Letter
 All higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) (verification required)
 Official translations if documents are not in English, French, Dutch, or
German (verification required)
 Detailed portfolio showcasing a selection of your work, including link to your
video (max. 30MB)
 English language proficiency certificate:
o TOEFL iBT minimum 89, or
o IELTS Academic minimum overall band 6.5, or
o Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE)

Exemptions apply for holders of a Belgian, Dutch, Luxembourg or German

Master of Management
For who?

The Master of Management is an international one-year master programme

(in English) that prepares students for a career in dynamic, international
business environments. The programme focuses on confronting students
with challenging strategic business problems to familiarize them with all
major aspects of a business.

Admission Requirements

Specific degree requirements for students with a Flemish or non-Flemish

degree.

Must-have documents:

 Valid ID or Passport
 Curriculum Vitae (CV)
 Motivation Letter (max. 3 pages)
 All higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) (verification required)
 Official translations if documents are not in English, French, Dutch, or
German (verification required)
 English language proficiency certificate:
o TOEFL iBT minimum 89, or
o IELTS Academic minimum overall band 6.5, or
o Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE)

Exemptions apply to applicants from certain countries (nationality or on

campus academic degree obtained). Countries with exemption: Australia,
Canada (English speaking part), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom,
United States of America.

Nice-to-have documents:

 Thesis abstract (title and short description of a previously written thesis)

Master of Biomedical Sciences

For who?

The Master of Biomedical Sciences focuses on state-of-the-art methodology,

knowledge, insight and academic skills, enabling graduates to unravel the
molecular mechanisms of health and disease as independent researchers.
The programme provides students with the knowledge and skills required for
the proper design of a scientific research project.

Admission Requirements

There are specific degree requirements, depending on the specialisation of

your choice.
Must-have documents:

 Valid ID or Passport
 Curriculum Vitae (CV)
 Motivation Letter
 All higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) (verification required)
 Official translations if documents are not in English, French, Dutch, or
German (verification required)
 English language proficiency certificate:
o TOEFL iBT minimum 89, or
o IELTS Academic minimum overall band 6.5.

Exemptions apply to native speakers and holders of a degree fully taught in

English (with official medium of instruction attestation).

All candidates whose application has been positively evaluated by the

Admission Board will be invited to complete an online test on basic
knowledge of biomedical sciences.

Once fully admitted and enrolled, all new students will participate in a
practical lab skills session. You will receive detailed feedback on your
results, and a remediation session will be organised if needed.

Master of Transportation Sciences

For who?

Transportation is a dynamic field and career opportunities are on the rise

worldwide in the private and public sector including government agencies,
road and transport authorities, transport operators, and local and
international consulting agencies. Our alumni are typically employed as
senior transportation planning professionals, public transport managers,
traffic safety consultants or to research new transportation systems and
technology. Are you looking for an exciting job, offering many career
opportunities, then a master’s degree in Transportation Sciences is the right
choice for you!

Admission Requirements

There are specific degree requirements.

The distance learning option is only available to applicants who wish to

combine work and study. It does not apply to students who are working part-
time while studying (e.g. weekend jobs), nor to students enrolled in
postgraduate or PhD programmes.

 Employer Declaration (distance learning only):

o provide proof of employment of min. 80 hours/month, or
o provide proof of employment in a self-employed statute of min. 80
hours/month, or
o provide proof of being a job-seeker who is entitled to benefits.

Master of Statistics and Data Science

For who?

The English two-year programme of Master of Statistics and Data Science at

Hasselt University combines a solid study of principles of statistics and
modern data science, with a focus on applications in the life sciences (e.g.
clinical trials, epidemiology, public health, genomics, …).

Admission Requirements

Specific degree requirements for students with a Flemish or non-Flemish

degree.

Exemptions apply for holders of a Flemish degree, native speakers, and

holders of a degree fully taught in English (with medium of instruction
attestation).

 Course descriptions (content and learning outcomes in English) for all

completed quantitative, mathematical and statistical courses, including
objectives, topics, workload, and course materials (not a transcript).
 Exemption Request for the Master of Statistics and Data Science:
Applicants who have already acquired a quantitative master (e.g.
mathematics, (bio) engineering, ...) or a PhD degree that included a solid
initial training in statistics, can receive a substantial number of course
exemptions. To request these exemptions, you must submit an exemption
form when applying for the programme. The Admission Board decides on
these course exemptions after a thorough evaluation of knowledge and skills.
(Not for ICP students.)

Nice-to-have documents:

 Holders of an international academic degree are strongly recommended to

include the GRE General Test result in their application. There are no
minimum score requirements for this test. The institutional code of Hasselt
University is 3112.

If the Admission Board has doubts about your prior knowledge, you may be
invited to take an take an admission test.

Master of Energy Engineering Technology

For who?

The Master of Energy Engineering Technology in an international master

programme for who is interested in becoming an Energy Transition Expert.
Admission Requirements

Honours Bachelor’s (BSc, BTech, BEng, etc.) or Master’s degree with a broad
focus on energy-related domains.

 Valid ID or Passport
 Curriculum Vitae (CV)
 Motivation Letter
 All higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) (verification required)
 Official translations if documents are not in English, French, Dutch, or
German (verification required)
 English language proficiency certificate:
o TOEFL iBT 79, or
o IELTS Academic overall band 6.5, or
o DuoLingo English Test 120, or
o Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE)

Exemptions apply to native speakers and holders of a degree fully taught in

Please note that the tuition fee (26-27) for non-EEA students for this
programme is 9,493.90 euros. Make sure you are fully aware of this cost
before submitting your application.

ICP Scholarship

The ICP Scholarship is only available for the following four on-campus
programmes:

 Master of Statistics and Data Science - Biostatistics

 Master of Statistics and Data Science - Bioinformatics
 Master of Statistics and Data Science - Epidemiology
 Master of Transportation Sciences - Traffic Safety

For who?

 Candidates must be nationals and residents of one of the following 30

countries (not necessarily the same country) at the time of application.

Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea,

Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal,
South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe
Asia: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Vietnam
Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru
  Candidates must not exceed 35 years of age on January 1 of the intake year.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for the ICP Scholarship, applicants must:

 Upload the ICP Scholarship Application Form. Applications submitted without

this form will not be processed as scholarship applications.
 Upload two recent letters of recommendation.
 Meet the admission requirements for the chosen master’s programme (either
Master of Statistics and Data Science or Master of Transportation Sciences).

Master Mind Scholarship

The Flemish Ministry of Education and Training awards Master Mind

Scholarships to outstanding students from around the world who wish to
pursue a master’s programme in Flanders or Brussels.

For who?

 Applicants of all nationalities (except Russian) may apply, provided their

previous degree was obtained outside Flanders.
 Students enrolled only in a preparatory, bridging, or distance learning
programme are not eligible.
 Only students not currently enrolled at a Flemish higher education institution
are eligible, except those completing a preparatory programme leading to a
master’s starting in September.
 This scholarship cannot be combined with any Flemish government or
Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Admission Requirements

 Grade Point Average of 3.5 out of 4.0: [Link]/gpa-calculator/

 English language proficiency certificate:
o TOEFL iBT minimum 94, or
o IELTS Academic minimum overall band 7, or
o Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE), or
o Similar results in another official English language test.

Submit an Application

Now that you have chosen a programme, viewed the deadlines and checked
the admission requirements it is time to submit your application!

Make sure to submit your application for the correct academic year: 2026–
2027.

The application process at Hasselt University consists of two mandatory

steps. Your application will not be considered complete until both steps are
fulfilled:

1. Online Application
2. Document Verification

1. Online Application

Complete your online application through our Application Portal. You will
be required to provide personal information, academic history, and upload
the necessary documents. You can upload all mandatory documents
immediately or after submission under the ‘Upload Documents’ section of
the Portal. To apply for one of our academic master’s programmes, you must
hold an academic bachelor’s degree. Upload and provide verification of all
previously obtained higher education degrees.

ICP Scholarship

If you are eligible for the ICP scholarship and wish to apply, complete the
Google Form linked in the application form. You will receive your
answers by email; upload the answers in the application form.

If you are unable to upload it during submission, or if you forget, you can still
add it after submission via the Upload Documents section. Select
'Scholarship Application' from the dropdown menu and upload your file.

Applications without this document cannot be considered for the scholarship.

Applications from candidates who are not eligible for the scholarship, or who
have applied to a programme not offered with the scholarship, will be
rejected.

Essential Information
All documents must be uploaded in PDF format. Please merge all Higher
Education Diploma(s) into one file, and do the same for all Higher Education
Transcript(s). Your application will only be processed once your higher
education documents can be verified using the verification method you
selected. All communication and status updates will be provided through the
Application Portal.

Application Deadline

Submit your application before the deadline specified for your chosen
programme. Please note that applicants who apply close to the deadline will
not have the possibility to provide additional documents if something is
missing.

Applications that are incomplete by the deadline cannot be processed.

2. Document Verification

After submitting your online application, all higher education diploma(s) and
transcript(s) must be verified for your application to be processed. You will
be required to select a verification method during your online application.
Applications will not be reviewed without proper verification of
academic records. You can verify your documents using one of the following
methods:

Digital Verification Request

 Email all diploma(s) and transcript(s) with a QR code or verification link

to verification@[Link].
 Documents must be verifiable through your institution’s website, QR code, e-
apostille, or e-legalisation.
 The verification must grant access to the full document.

Please note: uploads, scans or photocopies without an official digital

verification request will not be considered.

Direct Email Verification

 Request your previous educational institution(s) to email your diploma(s) and

transcript(s) directly to verification@[Link].
 They should include your application number and programme of choice in the
message.
 Ask the institution(s) to include you in CC when sending the email. This way,
you can follow up on when we have received the verification.
Please note: In compliance with GDPR regulations, Hasselt University will
not contact previous higher education institutions directly. All verification-
related costs must be fully covered by the applicant; UHasselt does not make
any payments for verification.

Important: The email for the verification of the documents must have
reached us no later than one week after the application deadline.
Your application will only be processed after we receive the email from your
previous higher educational institution with your documents. If you do not
receive an update, it means we have not received the email.

Certified Hard Copies

 Send certified copies of your diploma(s) and transcript(s) by postal mail.

 Each page must be freshly stamped and signed by an official institution.
 Send your documents via an express service or registered mail so you can
always track your shipment.
 Do not send your original documents.

Please note: Hasselt University will not cover any costs to receive your
documents. Documents cannot be returned.

Important: Your certified documents must have arrived at our office no

later than one week after the application deadline. Your application
will only be processed after we receive your certified hard copies by postal
mail. If you do not receive an update, it means we have not received your
documents.

Application Follow-up

Everything related to your application can be tracked through the Application

Portal.

Arrival of Documents

Due to the high volume of applications we cannot confirm the arrival of

documents.

 You can track postal deliveries using your track-and-trace code.

 Make sure your digital verification request is correct and complete.
  Ask your institution to include you in CC when verifying documents by email.

Processing and Updates

We will start processing your application once your online application is

complete and all of your diploma(s) and transcript(s) can be verified. You can
track the status of your application through the Application Portal.

Overview of Application Statuses

An overview of the different application statuses, listed below along with a

short explanation for each, giving a clear picture of where an application
stands in the process.

To Be Verified

Your application still needs to be processed. Please be aware that we can

only begin processing once both your online application and the verification
of your documents are complete.

Please refrain from contacting us for updates, as we are working to process

all applications as quickly as possible.

Waiting for Documents

Some documents are missing in your online application. You can check which
ones are missing in your portal. You can view the required documents and
comments in the Upload Documents section of the Application Portal.
Each document will show a status: green for approved, red for rejected. If a
document is rejected, the reason will appear directly underneath it.

Verification Method Incorrect

The verification of your documents is incomplete or incorrect. Make sure all

higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) are verified using one of
the accepted verification methods. You must verify your documents
using another accepted method, no later than one week after the
specified deadline.

Also check the Upload Documents section in your portal to see if any
documents are missing, and review which documents have been approved or
rejected. Rejected documents include the reason for rejection - follow the
instructions to complete the online application.

It is not possible or necessary to update the method of verification. Once we

receive the verification your application will be further processed.

In Process

Your application is complete and has been submitted for evaluation to the
Admission Board. You will be informed as soon as a decision has been made.
This process may take several weeks.

Application Outcome

After evaluation, the Admission Board sends its decision to the Admissions
Office. You will be notified of one of the following outcomes via e-mail.

Admission Granted

Once admitted, you will receive an official admission letter with instructions
on the important next steps. You will also receive a document (Standard
Form) required for your visa application (if applicable). All essential
documents can be accessed through the Application Portal.

You may now begin preparing your stay.

 Begin the visa process as soon as possible (if applicable)

 Register for health insurance (if you are a non-EEA student)
 Think of accommodation
 Arrange your travel to Belgium

Conditional Admission Granted

Conditional admission can follow two different pathways:

1. Pending Graduation

If you have not yet completed your current degree but your application has
been positively evaluated, you will receive an official conditional
admission letter, as well as supporting visa documents if applicable.
With this letter, you can proceed with the next steps, such as paying the
tuition fees, applying for visa, arranging accommodation, and planning your
arrival.
Final registration, however, is only possible after graduation and verification
of your final diploma and transcript. This will be done during your
appointment for final registration, when you must bring your final original
documents or certified hard copies thereof.

2. Pending Admission Test

If conditional admission depends on passing an admission test, you will not

receive any conditional admission documents and do not have to
pay the tuition fees. You must wait for the test results before the final
admission decision is made. Only after passing the test will you receive the
final decision and, in the case of admission or conditional admission, the
relevant admission documents.

No Admission Granted

If your application is unsuccessful, you will be notified by email, including the

reasons for the decision. The Admission Board conducts a thorough
evaluation, and all decisions are final.

Pay the Tuition Fees

Once admitted, you will receive instructions for paying the tuition fees.

Ensure you pay the tuition fees at least two weeks before your final
registration, as you cannot be enroled as a Hasselt University student until
the payment has been received. Once payment is confirmed, you can
proceed with the final registration. Appointments for final registration open
yearly in August.

For efficiency, all payments are made online. You can follow the status of
your payment via the Portal.

Finalise Registration

Final registrations open yearly in August.

The appointment system for the 2026-2027 academic year is not yet
open.

Be sure to complete your registration before the academic year starts. Book
an appointment here.
If you are admitted to a distance learning programme, you will be
automatically enrolled once the tuition fees have been paid, shortly before
the start of the academic year.

Next Steps

Once your registration is finalised, you will receive your student account
details along with instructions on how to activate it. You must then compose
your academic programme. It is essential you do this as soon as
possible.

You will also receive the enrolment documents needed to complete your
Town Hall registration. For more information on student life, facilities, and

Hasselt University has to send each student's registration data to the Higher
Education Database. The information in this database is the basis for any
potential payment of child support and/or scholarships.

Defer and Reapply

If you were admitted in the previous academic year but did not complete
final registration, you must reapply for the upcoming academic year.
Follow the steps below carefully.

Step 1: Reapply

Submit a new application via the Application Portal for the correct academic
year.

Upload the required documents (see details below).

Tip: Only upload diplomas/transcripts if you had not yet graduated or have
new degrees.

Step 2: Confirm Reapplication

After submitting your application, complete the Reapplication Confirmation

Form.

This must be done for each new application you submit.

The Admissions Office can then process your reapplication quickly.

Depending on your previous application, you belong to one of two
categories: Regular Deferment Applicants or ICP Scholarship
Deferment Applicants. Each category has slightly different documents
required for a reapplication.

Important: You do not have to verify your higher education diploma(s) and
transcript(s) if this was already done with your previous application. Only
if you had not yet graduated last year or have obtained new degrees are you
obliged to complete this step as part of your reapplication.

Tip: Check your category carefully to make sure your application is

complete.

Do you offer English-taught Master programmes?

Hasselt University offers 6 English Master programmes:

Do you offer English-taught Bachelor programmes?

All Bachelor programmes are taught in Dutch.

Candidates who wish to register in a Dutch-language Bachelor programme

will need to demonstrate good command of Dutch and meet the Dutch
language requirements.

Hasselt University does not offer a preparatory year to learn Dutch. Other
universities in Flanders do offer this preparatory programme. You can find

Am I eligible for admission to a Master’s programme?

We cannot assess your eligibility via e-mail in advance. You must first
submit a complete application, after which the Admission Board will review
your file based on several criteria - including your academic background,
English proficiency, and motivation.

Can I apply if I have not officially graduated yet?

You can apply for conditional admission with a proof of enrolment and
your latest transcript of records. Both of these must be verified via one of the
accepted verification methods as explained above.

ICP applicants cannot apply for conditional admission.

What are the admission requirements?

What are the English language requirements?

All information on language requirements per programme can be found

above. Each programme has specific language requirements.

The language requirement for the Master of Management is strict -

no exemptions are allowed. Sufficient knowledge of English is required
and is to be certified by one of the below-mentioned tests:

 IELTS Academic: minimum overall band score of 6.5

 TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 89
 Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) certificate

Exemptions apply only to applicants who are nationals of, or have

completed an on-campus degree in, one of the following
countries: Australia, Canada (English-speaking part), Ireland, New Zealand,
the United Kingdom, or the United States of America.

Do I need an APS certificate (for Chinese applicants)?

From the academic year 2007-2008 onwards all students from the P.R. China
will have to obtain a certificate of academic screening issued by the
Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) of the German Embassy in Beijing before
being allowed to enroll at any higher education institution, language course
or other preparatory course in Flanders. The APS certificate is also required
for obtaining a student visa to Belgium. More information on APS can be

Application Process
Do I have to pay an application fee?

Applying at Hasselt University is free of charge. You do not have to pay an

application fee.

How does the application process work?

All information on the application process can be found above.

The application process at Hasselt University consists of two mandatory

steps. Your application will not be considered complete until both steps are
fulfilled:

1. Online Application
2. Document Verification

How do I submit and manage my applications in the Application Portal?

Create an account in the Application Portal (use your existing account if you
already have one - creating a new account will block both). You will receive
a one-time activation link to set up your account.

Access the Application Portal using the links available on the website.

Start or continue your applications via the Overview of Applications tab.

Submitted applications cannot be edited, but extra documents can be
uploaded under the Upload Documents tab. You can also submit multiple
applications or withdraw an application yourself.

How should I verify my higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s)?

Document verification is a mandatory part of the application process. Only

once we can verify your higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s) will
your application be processed. The verification must have reached us no
later than one week after the application deadline.

All information on accepted methods of document verification can be found

above.

Important points:
  Verification must grand access to your full documents.
 Hasselt University will not request verifications from other institutions.
 Hasselt University does not cover any costs related to document verification.
 Certified hard copies cannot be returned back to you. Do not send your
original documents via postal mail.

Will I be notified when my documents arrive, and can I get them back?

Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to confirm the

individual arrival of documents. You can follow the status of your
application online via the Application Portal, or track postal deliveries using
your track-and-trace number.

To avoid delays, please ensure that any documents you have submitted for
digital verification are correct and complete, and consider asking your
institution to include you in CC when it comes to email verifications.

Processing may take several weeks. Only complete applications will be

reviewed, and you will receive an update once your file has been processed.

The certified hard copies you send us to complete the application

process cannot be returned. Therefore, it is crucial not to send us your
original documents, these cannot be returned to you.

What are the important guidelines for document submission?

To apply for one of our academic master’s programmes, you must hold an
academic bachelor’s degree. Upload and verify all previously obtained
higher education degrees.

1. File Format:
All documents must be uploaded in PDF format.
2. Merging Documents:
o Merge all of your diplomas into a single PDF file.
o Merge all of your transcripts into a single PDF file.

3. Verification Process:
Your online application will only be processed once your higher
education documents have been verified through the verification
method you selected.
4. Communication & Updates:
All communication and status updates regarding your application will
be handled through the Application Portal.
What happens after I submit my application (processing and status
updates)?

We will start processing your application only once your online

application is complete and all of your diploma(s) and transcript(s)
can be verified. You can track the status of your application through the
Application Portal.

How can I reapply for a master programme?

If you were admitted (including conditionally) last year but could not
complete final registration, and you wish to reapply for the upcoming
academic year, submit a new application via the Application
Portal. Follow the steps outlined above carefully.

Other Commonly Asked Questions

Can I edit my application?

Submitted applications cannot be edited. Please do not withdraw and

resubmit your application for minor mistakes in your name or address.
Contact us, and we can update this information for you.

Documents can be uploaded or updated at any time via the Upload

Documents section in the Application Portal after submission.

Verification methods cannot be changed and do not need to be altered.

Once we receive verification, your application will proceed to the next stage
of processing.

What is the learning account and how do I fill it in correctly?

In Flanders a system of learning account has been established to monitor

students' study progress and to stimulate students to make well-informed
study choices.

If you have never studied in Higher Education in Flanders, select 'incorrect'

for the study credits according to DHO. This will open another field where
you need to enter 140.
If you have to upload 'Proof of Insufficient Learning Credits' document
and have never studied in Belgium before then please upload a blank PDF
page.

What does status 'To Be Verified' mean?

If you have completed your online application and submitted documents for
verification through one of the accepted methods, but you still see the status
'to be verified,' it means your application has not yet been processed by the
Admissions Office. Please refrain from contacting us for updates, as we are
working to process all applications as quickly as possible.

What does status 'Waiting for Documents' mean?

This status means some of your submitted documents have been rejected or
are missing. You can view the required documents and comments in
the Upload Documents section of the Application Portal. Each
document will show a status: green for approved, red for rejected. If a
document is rejected, the reason will appear directly underneath it.

What does status 'Verification Method Incorrect' mean?

This status means the method you selected does not allow us to verify all of
your higher education diploma(s) and transcript(s). You must verify your
documents using another accepted method, no later than one week
after the specified deadline.

It is not possible or necessary to update the method of verification. Once we

receive the verification your application will be further processed.

What is a Thesis Abstract?

This is a nice-to-have document for the Master of Management

summarising a previously written thesis.

What is a Course Description?

The course description is a must-have document for the Master of

Statistics and Data Science. You have to provide an English version (or
translation) of the course descriptions for the statistical, mathematical, and
other quantitative courses you have already completed. Each description
should include the course objectives, main topics, workload, and course
materials used. You may also copy this information from your university’s
programme website.

Do I need a GRE certificate?

To apply for the Master of Statistics and Data Science programme a GRE
certificate is nice-to-have but not mandatory for holders of an
international academic degree. Applicants with a Belgian degree of higher
education are exempted from the GRE General test. There are no minimum
score requirements for the GRE general test. The institutional code of Hasselt
University for the GRE test is 3112.

Scholarships and Tuition Fees

How much is the tuition fee?

The tuition fee differs depending on the programme you want to enroll for.
Other factors such as your nationality determine the amount of the tuition
fee. Please check the Tuition Fees webpage for more info.

How and when do I pay the tuition fee, and can I pay in installments?

Once admitted, you will receive an invoice containing instructions on how to

pay the tuition fees. Payment can also be made online through the
Application Portal.

New international students are exempt from the deadline stated on the
invoice but must complete their payment no later than two weeks before
their final registration appointment.

Please note that payment in installments is not available. The tuition

fees must be paid in full before completing your final registration.

Can my tuition fee be refunded?

If you have not completed your enrolment, please withdraw your application
first via Overview of Applications in the Portal. Once withdrawn, submit your refund
request under My Requests (a one-day delay may occur before the balance appears
in the Portal).

If you are fully enrolled and wish to deregister, complete your official
deregistration first. After receiving the confirmation email, you can submit
your refund request under My Requests in the Portal.
No IBAN? Please email us your bank account details so we can process your
refund manually.

What scholarships are available for international students?

We offer two main scholarship opportunities:

 VLIR-UOS ICP Scholarship - available for the Master of Statistics

(Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or Quantitative Epidemiology) and the Master of
Transportation Sciences (Traffic Safety). Applicants must be under 35, hold
nationality from one of the eligible countries, and reside in one of these
countries at the time of application.
 Master Mind Scholarship - open to outstanding international students.

How to apply for the ICP scholarship?

If you are eligible for the ICP scholarship and wish to apply, you must fill in
the linked Google Form in the application form. The answers you receive by
email must be uploaded in the application form. If this is not possible,
or if you forget to do so before submitting, you can still upload them
afterwards in the Upload Documents section. There, you will find a dropdown
list of document types and can upload your file as a Scholarship Application
document. Without this document, your application will not be
processed as a scholarship application.

How to apply for the Master Mind scholarship?

Applications for the Master Mind scholarship will open towards the end of
December/beginning of January. Around that time, the info on the Master
Mind scholarship webpage will be updated.

This application process consist two parts:

1. Application for academic admission

2. Application for the Master Mind scholarship

How to reapply for the ICP scholarship?

If you were academically selected for the ICP Scholarship last year but did
not receive it, and you wish to reapply for the scholarship for the upcoming
academic year, submit a new application via the Application
Portal. Follow the steps outlined above carefully.

How do I submit letters of recommendation for the ICP Scholarship?

Two letters of recommendation must be uploaded to your online

application portal via the Upload Documents tab.

Guidelines:

The letters of recommendation must be written by an academic staff

member, scientist or superior who is familiar with your
(academic/professional) activities.

You should ask the recommender to clearly identify him- or herself: name,
title, work place, contact details, valid email address, relation with
the applicant. If possible, the recommender should use the official letter
heading of his/her institution.

The recommender should give his/her opinion frankly as to the applicant’s

professional strengths and weaknesses. You should ask the recommender to
include the following elements in the recommendation letter:

1. Clear identification of the person for whom the recommendation is given, and
for which program.
2. Evaluation of the candidate's academic performance (study results) or
professional performance.
3. Ranking of the candidate in comparison to his/her peers (top 50%, top 20%,
top 5%, top 2%) with respect to intellectual ability, quality of oral expression
and analytical ability.
4. Evaluation of the candidate's research capacity, potential and skills
(dissertation or research papers, possible research experience, critical
attitude, analytical skills …).
5. Suitability of the applicant for this specific program (knowledge of and/or
experience with the topic(s), motivation for graduate study in general and
this program in particular …).
6. Strong points and points to improve of the applicant’s personality and social
skills: how does the applicant interacts and collaborate with teachers, with
peers, in group work,…
7. Final conclusion as to why this applicant is (not) a suitable candidate for the
program.
The completed letter must be signed and dated by the recommender
together with an official stamp of the institution he/she belongs to.

After Admission
I have received an admission letter. What are the next steps?

 Start the visa procedure as soon as possible.

 Pay the tuition fee at the latest two weeks before your arrival in Belgium.
 Register for AON health insurance (non-EEU)
 Look for a student room.
 Travel to Belgium before the start of the orientation week.
 Register for the orientation programme.
 Book an appointment to finalise your registration. Distance learning students
do not need to book an appointment - final registration will be automatically
completed once the tuition fees have been paid and shortly before the start
of the academic year.
 Register at the town hall (within 1 week after your arrival) with proof of
enrolment.

Can the University help to obtain my visa?

Visa applications are the responsibility of the incoming student. The

university does not have any influence on the procedure and cannot
intervene in the visa process.

The role of Hasselt University is limited to providing an admission letter,

some practical information and, on demand, a letter to proof your solvency.

ATTENTION: Students should not enter Belgium with a tourist visa if they
intend to stay longer than 90 days or three months.

What is the proof of solvency?

When applying for a visa or a residence permit, students are asked to

proof their solvency. Depending on the country, one of the following proof of
solvency may apply:

 A document certifying that the student has been awarded a study grant or
scholarship.
 An agreement for acceptance of financial responsibility (letter of a guarantee)
by the so-called Annex 32.
 A proof of your own financial means by transferring a certain amount to a
blocked bank account in Belgium on your name.
In case you would like to use the last option (proof your own financial
means), Hasselt University can assist you and provide you a letter to proof

What are the living costs in Belgium?

Living standards are quite high in Belgium. Therefore, all international

students and guests of Hasselt University are advised to make sure that they
have the financial means for a stay in Belgium, before they leave their home
country.

Besides the tuition fee, education includes some other costs. You can find an

How to register for health insurance?

It is important for students travelling to Hasselt University from a non-EEU

country to check all information about health insurance on this webpage.

How to look for student housing?

Accommodation is arranged only for VLIR-ICP Scholarship students.

All other foreign students should find accommodation by themselves.

One option is to use the “housing database” put together by the Office for
Student Affairs of UHasselt. This database includes student rooms which are
let under conditions controlled by the Office for Student Affairs. Visit the
Student housing webpage for more info.

An alternative option is to rent accommodation from landlords not

subscribing to the UHasselt housing database or from private housing
agencies.

Students who are not in Belgium before the beginning of September might
encounter difficulties in finding a room. By that time there will be almost no
rooms left on the list that is made available through the Office for Student
Affairs. Note that the later you arrive, the larger the problem to find a room.

Can I defer my admission?

You do not need to request deferment and simply have to follow the steps as
explained above.
Final Registration and Beyond
When do I have to arrive in Belgium?

You need to be present before the start of the academic year, preferably
before the start of the orientation programme. The orientation programme
will be organised a week before the start of the academic year. The exact
date by which you have to be present is mentioned on your admission letter
(‘Arrival date’).

You can find the starting date of the academic year and another important
dates in the academic calendar.

When and how do I have to finalise my registration?

Once you are admitted to the programme of your choice, your registration at
our university is not finalised yet.

You will have to book an appointment to finalise your registration. Your

tuition fees must have been paid before the appointment. Final registrations
open yearly in August. Your registration needs to be finalised before the start
of the academic year.

Have you been admitted to a distance learning programme?

You do not need to book an appointment. Your final registration will be

automatically completed shortly before the start of the academic year once
your tuition fees have been paid.

When does the academic year start?

At Hasselt University, the academic year starts on the third Monday of

September.

The starting date of the academic year and other important dates can be

Do you organise an orientation week for international students?

A week prior to the start of the academic year, UHasselt organises

orientation days for international students. Please take a look at this
webpage for more info on the orientation days.

Which steps do I have to take after my final registration?

Once you have finalised your registration you will have access to your
student account. You will then need to compose your academic programme.
It is very important to do that as soon as possible.

I have graduated. When do I receive my official diploma and diploma

supplement?

International students will receive their diploma and diploma supplement

during the graduation ceremony or shortly after.

If you are not in Belgium any more, your diploma and diploma supplement
will be sent by registered postal mail. You will receive an email to verify your
current address.
