The Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, asteroids, comets, and meteoroids, all held together by the Sun's gravity. The planets are categorized into inner (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) and outer (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) planets, each with unique characteristics. Understanding the Solar System is crucial for studying space, gravity, and the potential for life beyond Earth.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM

The Solar System is a large family of celestial objects that move around the Sun. It includes the
Sun, eight planets, their moons, asteroids, comets, and meteoroids. All these objects are held
together by the strong force of gravity of the Sun. The Solar System is a very small part of the
huge universe, but it is our home in space.

The Sun

The Sun is the centre of the Solar System. It is a huge ball of hot gases, mainly hydrogen and
helium. The Sun provides heat and light to all the planets. Without the Sun, life on Earth would
not be possible. It is so big that it contains more than 99% of the total mass of the Solar System.
The Sun also controls the movement of all planets by its gravity.

Planets of the Solar System

There are eight planets in the Solar System. All planets move around the Sun in fixed paths
called orbits. The planets do not have their own light; they shine by reflecting sunlight.

The planets are divided into two main groups:

1. Inner planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars

2. Outer planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

Inner Planets

● Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It is very hot during the day and very cold at
night.
● Venus is the hottest planet due to its thick atmosphere. It is also called Earth’s twin
because of similar size.
● Earth is the only planet known to support life. It has air, water, and suitable temperature.
● Mars is called the Red Planet because of iron-rich dust. Scientists believe it may have
had water in the past.
Outer Planets

● Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. It has a giant storm called the Great
Red Spot.
● Saturn is famous for its beautiful rings made of ice and rocks.
● Uranus rotates on its side and has a bluish-green colour.
● Neptune is the farthest planet and has very strong winds.

Moons

Moons are natural satellites that move around planets. Earth has one moon, while Jupiter has
more than 90 known moons. The Moon affects tides on Earth and reflects sunlight at night.

Other Objects in the Solar System

● Asteroids are rocky objects found mainly between Mars and Jupiter in the asteroid belt.
● Comets are made of ice and dust. When they come close to the Sun, they form a
glowing tail.
● Meteoroids are small pieces of rock moving in space. When they enter Earth’s
atmosphere, they are called meteors.

Importance of the Solar System

The Solar System helps us understand how planets and stars are formed. It also helps
scientists study space, gravity, and the possibility of life on other planets. Space missions and
satellites depend on the knowledge of the Solar System.

Conclusion
The Solar System is a fascinating part of space that includes the Sun, planets, moons, and
many other objects. Each planet is unique and plays an important role in the system. Studying
the Solar System helps us learn more about Earth and the universe. It also inspires humans to
explore space and discover new mysteries beyond our planet.
