What Is a Preposition?
A preposition is a word that connects a noun with other words in the sentence, it shows
the two words are related.
Types of Prepositions:
Preposition of Direction/Movement.
The preposition of direction shows some type of movement. To show the direction in a
sentence used to, in, into, on, and onto, at, above, over, behind, in front of, between,
besides, below, across, against, along, around, away, down, from, into, towards, and under,
etc.
Example:
1. The dog walked away from me.
2. My grandparents live across the street from us.
3. We walked towards the exit after the movie was over.
5. John just kicked the ball down the hill.
6. We all sat around the campfire while my father told us stories about his childhood.
Fill the blanks using in or into:

Preposition of Time
The preposition of time refers to one point in time. Use the preposition in, at, and on as
they specifically tell us when the event is about to occur.
1. Use ‘at’ with the specific time of the day. Also use ‘at’ with noon, night, and midnight.
Examples:
i. I got to school at 8:00 am.
ii. He eats lunch at noon.
iii. She often goes for a walk at night.
2. Use ‘on’ with days. The word cannot show a specific time, instead it can show a duration
of time
Examples:
i. I work on Saturdays.
ii. She does laundry on Wednesdays.
1. I was born in the year 1999.
2. We were supposed to arrive at 2’o clock.
3. The Baisakhi festival falls on Thursday this year.
4. The plane will arrive by 9 pm.

Preposition of Place -
In this type of preposition, we refer to a particular place of a person or an object relative to
another person or object. The various prepositions of place are as follows: on, at, in, above,
over, behind, in front of, between, besides, below, etc.
Example:
1. The cafeteria is behind that building near the petrol pump.
2. The train is going under the tunnel right now.
3. Let us put the cake in front of the guests.
4. I live on the 7th street of Oxford Lane.

Exercise 5 – Read the text given below and underline the prepositions.
On a very hot and sunny day, a thirsty crow was flying in search of water. Due to the hot
weather, most of the ponds had dried up. Suddenly, he saw a vessel on the ground. When
he flew towards it, he saw there was very little water at the bottom of the vessel. While
thinking about how he could drink that water, he saw little pebbles lying around. He
started dropping them one by one into the vessel. After some time, the water level rose. The
thirsty crow quenched its thirst and flew away happily.
