INTRODUCTION
What exactly is modular fixturing? In many ways modular fixturing is GRID HOLES VS. EARLIER T-SLOT SYSTEMS:
just like permanent fixturing, except for a few key differences. First, The two primary forms of modular systems available today are those
modular fixtures can be assembled entirely from reusable off-the-shelf with grid-pattern holes and earlier types with T slots to mount compo-
components, without machining. Next, many modular components are nents. Grid holes offer many advantages over T slots. Modular sys-

slots cross each other, a weak point exists.

MULTIPURPOSE GRID HOLES OFFER

MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY:
Grid-pattern modular-fixturing systems come in two styles: those with
alternating dowel holes and tapped holes and those with multipurpose
holes. The alternating-hole style does not offer as many advantages
as the Carr Lane multipurpose-hole style. Multipurpose holes have
both an alignment bushing and threaded insert in the same hole. This
arrangement permits each hole to serve as an alignment hole, mount-
ing hole, or both. Multipurpose holes are laid out in a standard 1" or 2"
grid pattern (depending on the size) to allow the maximum number of
mounting locations.

FIXTURING:
Modular fixturing is an ideal answer to many workholding problems.
One-time jobs, found especially in job shops, are ideal for modular fix-
CHOICE OF THREE SYSTEM SIZES:
A good modular fixturing system needs to accommodate a wide range
turing; with modular fixturing, a workholder can be economically built
of workpiece sizes. Only Carr Lane offers a full line of modular compo-
even for a one-part run. Jobs that do not repeat on a regular basis are
nents in three system sizes. As a comparison to choose the proper

totype parts; since prototypes are often changed or redesigned, the
cost of building a permanent fixture for each new variation would be
prohibitive. Replacement parts are another perfect application; modu-
lar fixturing allows a company to respond to orders as they are
received, instead of shipping parts from an inventory. Trial fixturing is
also an excellent application; modular workholders allow a designer to
fine tune tooling ideas before a final production workholder is built.
Finally, modular fixturing is valuable while permanent fixtures are built
or repaired.

MULTIPURPOSE HOLES

Mini

Every multipurpose hole on a tooling plate or block has a precision alignment bushing on top, with a threaded insert below it. Multipurpose
holes will accept Locating Screws, socket-head cap screws, studs, and many other threaded components. The proper mounting screw for
each component is listed in its table of dimensions. Locating screws are used to locate and fasten at the same time. Note: mini-size systems
use a Locating Bushing together with a socket-head cap screw for extra strength, instead of a Locating Screw.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
GRID ADDRESS SYSTEM

Mini Standard Heavy

The grid pattern of multipurpose holes on every tooling plate
and tooling block face is labelled with letters in one direction
and numbers in the perpendicular direction. Tooling-block
faces are numbered (counterclockwise) with Roman numer-
als. This allows recording the mounting-hole location of
each component (e.g., A2, B3, D7, etc.) as part of perma-
nent documentation. See the bill-of-material sheet on page
9 as a sample.

Multipurpose holes are spaced within ±.0008 inches of true

position on all tooling plates and blocks. The mini system is
even more accurate, with all holes spaced within ±.0004
inches.

CUSTOM TOOLING PLATES

To build your own custom tooling plates with multipurpose mounting holes, we offer
precision bushings and threaded inserts separately. See hole locations and toler-
ances above (holes must be jig bored), and page 4 for proper counterbore depth to
install bushings. The threaded insert’s locking keys can be driven down by the
bushing as it is pressed into the tooling plate.

MOUNTING TOOLING PLATES ON SUBPLATES

Mini, Standard, and Heavy

All Rectangular Tooling Plates can be mounted as
quick-change fixture plates on a subplate, as well as
directly on a T-slotted machine table. Instead of the
Locating Keys and Sure-Lock Fixture Keys used above
for two-axis location, Subplate Locating Keys (page
177 of tooling-component catalog section) are used for
three-axis location. A round key and a diamond
(relieved) key are used together for precise location
without binding. The subplate hole pattern shown here
allows mounting any size and combination of standard
or heavy Rectangular Tooling Plates, either lengthwise
or widthwise.

JIS Mounting
JIS-type mounting is the most-common way to mount
tooling plates and blocks on a machining-center pallet.
Here the plate or block is located from two precisely
ground reference edges at 90° to each other. The plate
or block is pulled against the pallet's edge locators
using three socket-head cap screws (page 32) and
also fastened down with four to eight socket-head cap
screws, depending on the size. Swivel Hoist Rings are
recommended for lifting tooling blocks and large tooling
plates (page 36 of tooling-component catalog section).

a radial pin, are required (page 178 of tooling-

Precision two-sided frame for mounting Vertical
Tooling Plates (page 25), allowing quick fixture
changes. Also, the center opening can be used to
machine a workpiece from the back side. Both faces
are accurately finish ground to tight tolerances, and
qualified to the base. One-piece cast construction pro-
vides superior accuracy, dimensional stability, and
vibration dampening. Available in three popular pallet
sizes, with mounting holes to fit almost any USA or
metric slot spacing. Dual mounting capability allows
both JIS mounting (locating from two reference edges)
and DIN mounting (locating from center and radial
holes) with excellent accuracy. See page 7 for mount-
ing information.

Each Vertical Tooling Plate is accurately

mounted on a Window Tooling Block using
two Locating Screws at the top corners,
and two socket-head cap screws (four on

Quick-Change
An important new quick-change tooling system (US Subplate Tooling
Patent No. 5,788,225). Fixtures can be assembled off Quick-Change Block (p. 31)
of the machine tool, then quickly mounted on a Pallet Tooling Plate
specially designed pallet subplate, with excellent
locating repeatability. The same subplate accepts
modular tooling plates, blank tooling plates for
permanent fixtures, and subplate tooling blocks.
Accurate location is provided by two tapered pins in
the subplate, together with mating tapered receiver
bushings in the tooling plate, similar to the way that a Quick-Change
machine pallet itself is located in a horizontal Pallet Subplate
machining center. Pins and receiver bushings are (p. 30)
made from hardened tool steel. Minimal contact area
between tooling plate and subplate allows quick
cleaning when changing fixtures. Tooling plates are
available in a full range of standard pallet sizes, either
modular or blank. Modular plates are finish ground to
tight tolerances, with a grid of multipurpose holes
(hole spacing +/-.0008, hole location from receiver
bushings +/-.0016). See pages 30 and 31 for pallet
subplates and subplate tooling blocks. Machine Pallet

HIGH-RISE CLAMPS
For clamping taller workpieces. All-in-one clamp construc-
tion for quick, safe setups. Modular design allows stacking
for height flexibility. Clamp straps slide back for loading
clearance. Tapped-nose and gooseneck clamp straps can
be reversed to use either end for clamping. The tapped-
nose end accepts a contact bolt, while the cylindrical end is
ideal for clamping in horizonal holes or narrow slots. The
Slotted gooseneck strap provides a low clamp profile, and can also
Heel be reversed to use the plain end as a tapered-nose clamp.

SCREW-CLAMP ADAPTORS
1018 STEEL, BLACK OXIDE FINISH

Extremely useful mounting adaptor for screw clamps. Accepts any of the
four types of screw clamp shown below (order separately). These screw
clamps all use our patented left-hand-thread swivel feet (the ball end of the
body screws into the foot for easy installation and removal). The adaptor
has two tapped holes to allow installing a screw clamp at either of two
Screw-Clamp heights. The tapped holes are angled slightly downward to provide some
downthrust force. See pages 64, 66-67 and 70 of tooling-component catalog
Adaptor section for complete dimensions and additional sizes of screw clamps.

POWER WORKHOLDING
Power workholding and modular fixturing
make an excellent combination. Power work-
holding is an obvious choice to reduce cycle
time in high-volume and long-run production.
Although clamping speed is an obvious and
important advantage, power workholding’s
biggest payoff usually is improved workpiece
accuracy and the elimination of scrap. The
improved workpiece quality is due consistent,
controlled clamping, combined with automati-
cally adjusted precision work supports that
resist workpiece deformation during machin-
ing. Since power clamps can be used easily
on modular fixtures, even short-run jobs can
Manual Fixture greatly benefit from power workholding.

From these two examples, you can see that

assembling a modular workholder for a
power-workholding operation is basically the
same process as that for a manual fixture.
There are slight differences in the types of
components used to position, clamp, and
support the workpiece.

Power clamps, supports, and accessories

used with modular fixtures can be reused,
just as any other modular components.
Therefore, modular fixturing is a very inex-
pensive way to achieve the significant bene-
fits of power workholding: improved part qual-
ity and reduced manufacturing time.

Fixture hose is a unique small-diame-

ter, braided-steel-covered hydraulic
hose that is ideally suited for modular-
fixturing applications. This hose can be
installed in the same tight-fit areas as
custom-bent tubing, yet installs as easi-
ly as conventional hydraulic hose.
Keeping a variety of different-length fix-
ture hoses on hand ensures that virtu-
ally any modular power-workholding fix-
ture can be assembled without custom
fabrication.
