1. INTRODUCTION TO CONSUMER RIGHTS
A consumer is a person who buys goods or avails services for
personal use. In today’s market system, consumers interact daily
with sellers and service providers. However, consumers are often
exploited through unfair trade practices such as overpricing,
adulteration, misleading advertisements, and defective goods.
Consumer Rights are protec ons given by law to safeguard
consumers from such exploita on. These rights ensure fairness,
transparency, and accountability in the marketplace.

2. WHO IS A CONSUMER?
According to the Consumer Protection Act: - A consumer is a person
who buys goods or services for personal use. - A consumer does not
buy goods for resale or commercial purposes.
Example:
A student buying a school bag is a consumer.
A trader buying bags to sell further is not a consumer.

3. TYPES OF CONSUMER RIGHTS
The Consumer Protection Act provides six basic rights to consumers:
3.1 Right to Safety
This right protects consumers from goods and services that are
dangerous to life and property.
Example: Defec ve electrical appliances.
3.2 Right to Informa on
Consumers have the right to know about the quality, quantity, price,
ingredients, and expiry date of products.
Example: Food labels showing nutri onal values.
3.3 Right to Choose
Consumers should have access to a variety of goods at competitive
prices without pressure.
3.4 Right to Be Heard
Consumers have the right to raise complaints and have them
considered by authorities.
3.5 Right to Seek Redressal
Consumers can seek compensation or replacement for defective
goods or poor services.
3.6 Right to Consumer Educa on
Consumers have the right to be informed about their rights and
responsibilities.

4. IMPORTANCE OF CONSUMER RIGHTS
Consumer rights are important because: - They protect consumers
from exploitation - They promote fair trade practices - They
encourage quality production - They empower consumers to make
informed choices - They build trust in the market system
5. LEGAL FRAMEWORK PROTECTING CONSUMERS
Consumer Protec on Act, 2019
In India, consumer rights are protected under the Consumer
Protection Act, 2019, which replaced the 1986 Act. It addresses
issues related to unfair trade practices, misleading advertisements,
and e-commerce.

6. CONSUMER COURTS AND REDRESSAL
MECHANISM
India follows a three-tier consumer dispute redressal system:
1. District Consumer Commission
2. State Consumer Commission
3. National Consumer Commission
These courts provide simple, quick, and affordable justice.
7. COMMON CONSUMER PROBLEMS
Some common consumer issues include: - Adulteration of food items
- Defective electronic goods - Overcharging - Misleading
advertisements - Poor after-sales service
Steps to File a Complaint:
1. Collect bill and warranty card
2. Approach the seller
3. File a complaint in consumer court

A consumer bought a mixer grinder that stopped working within a
week. The consumer court ordered replacement and compensation.
Case Study 2: False Adver sement
A company claimed a product could cure diseases. The court fined
the company for misleading advertisement.

Consumer rights play a vital role in protecting consumers from

rights empowers consumers to make informed decisions. The
Consumer Protection Act and consumer courts help maintain
