EXPOSITORY TEXT

Definition

An expository text is a text meant to inform or teach a reader something. It


is always non-fiction because it should be true.

Social Function of Exposition Text

The social function of exposition text is to persuade readers or listeners that


a topic is correct or important. It also aims to analyze the topic and develop
arguments to support the thesis or opinion.

Generic Structure in Exposition Text

To write an exposition text, there are three structures that must be learned
and applied in your writing. Among them are:

Thesis : This section will contain the issue or problem that will be
raised while in analytical exposition this section will contain
the position, opinion or attitude of the author.
Argument : The section that contains opinions or arguments that the
author begins to present. Both hortatory exposition and
analytical exposition have the same explanation in this
section.
Reiteration : Reiteration is a conclusion. In hortatory exposition it will
contain recommendations or suggestions from the author
regarding the problem that is the theme of the writing. While
in analytical exposition, this section will contain a restatement
from the author

Language Feature of Exposition Text

In addition to the structure of the writing, there are linguistic elements that
you need to pay attention to when writing exposition text. Among them are:

 Using simple present tense.


 Using many conjunctions such as because of, so, therefore, the reason,
and others.
 Contains arguments.
 Using many words that contain cause and effect.
 Using vocabulary that can arouse the reader's emotions, such as:
Amused, concerned, innocent, unreasonable etc.
TYPE OF EXPOSITORY TEXT

There are two main types of exposition text: hortatory exposition and
analytical exposition.

Hortatory exposition
 A text that encourages or convinces readers to do or not to do something
 A text that includes recommendations or suggestions at the end
 A text that is more subjective, as it is usually written from the writer's
point of view

Analytical exposition
 A text that explains the writer's perspective on an issue
 A text that aims to persuade readers to believe what the writer believes
 A text that is more objective, as it includes arguments supported by
evidence
