2. The resistance of a platinum thermometer is 50 Ω at 0∘C and 58.5 Ω at 50∘C.
Calculate the temperature coefficient of resistance of platinum at 0∘C.
3. A metallic conductor has resistance R1=12 Ω at 30∘C and R2=15 Ωat 130∘C.
Assuming linear variation, determine:
a) The temperature coefficient α at 30∘C
b) The resistance at 0∘C
4. The resistance of a nichrome wire is 20 Ω at 0∘C. Its temperature coefficient of
. resistance is 0.0004 ∘C−1.
At what temperature will its resistance become 22 Ω?
5. A certain resistor has resistance R0=100 Ω at 25∘C. When heated, its resistance
becomes 130 Ω If the temperature coefficient of the material is 0.005 ∘C−1, find the
final temperature of the resistor.
6. A copper wire of length 2 m and cross-sectional area 1.5×10−6 m2 has
resistivity 1.7×10−8 Ωm
Calculate the resistance of the wire.
7. A wire of resistance 10 Ω has length 5 m and uniform cross-sectional
area 2×10−6 m2.
If the same material is used to draw another wire of length 8 m and
cross-sectional area 1×10−6 m2, find the resistance of the new wire.
8. The resistance of a metal rod is 6 Ω when its length is 3 m and its
cross-sectional area is 3×10−6 m2.
The rod is drawn so that its length becomes 6 m and its volume remains

9. Two wires A and B of the same material have equal lengths, but the diameter of
wire B is twice that of wire A.

10. A nichrome wire of length 4 m and resistance 16 Ω is used as a heating
element.
It is replaced by another nichrome wire of the same material and cross-sectional
area but length 6 m.
a) What will be the resistance of the new wire?
b) How does the heat produced (for the same applied voltage) compare with
that of the original wire (greater, smaller, or same)?
11. An electric kettle draws a current of 4 A from a 230 V supply.
a) What is the resistance of the kettle?
b) If the supply voltage drops to 207 V, what current will it draw (assume
resistance constant)?
12. A resistor of unknown resistance is connected across a 12 V battery and a
current of 0.6 A flows through it.
a) Calculate the resistance.
b) If another identical resistor is connected in series with it, what will be the total
current drawn from the battery?
13. A 40 W, 200 V lamp is connected to a 200 V supply.
a) Find the current drawn by the lamp.
b) Using Ohm’s law, calculate the resistance of the lamp filament at its operating
condition.
14. A conductor of resistance 15 Ω is connected to a DC source.
a) What potential difference is required to produce a current of 0.4 A?
b) If the applied voltage is increased so that the current becomes 0.8 A, what is
the new voltage across the conductor?
