Biostat Assignment

The document outlines a biostatistics assignment for undergraduate students, consisting of various statistical problems related to normal distribution, probabilities, and data analysis. Students are required to calculate percentages, limits, and probabilities based on given means and standard deviations across different scenarios. The assignment emphasizes timely completion and submission as it is graded.

Biostatistics Assignment for undergraduate students

Note: As this is graded assignment please complete and submit on time.

1. In the knowledge, attitude and practice study participants categorized as

knowledgeable if they score 50% or more of the given knowledge questions.

The score of a large number of participants were sampled and the mean and
standard deviation were calculated as 42% and 8% respectively.

Assuming this data is normally distributed, what percentage of study

participants categorized as knowledgeable?
2. A company makes parts for a medical machine. The lengths of the parts must
be within certain limits or they will be rejected.

A large number of parts were measured and the mean and standard deviation
were calculated as 3.1 m and 0.005 m respectively.

Assuming this data is normally distributed and 99.7% of the parts were
accepted, what are the limits?
3. The mean June midday temperature in Region ‘A’ is 36°C and the standard
deviation is 3°C

Assuming this data is normally distributed, how many days in June would you
expect the midday temperature to be between 39°C and 42°C?
4. The mean serum cholesterol level of adult patients is 220 mg/100ml and the
standard deviation is 25 mg/100ml

Assume that this data is normally distributed.

How many percent of them would you expect the serum cholesterol level to
be less than 170 mg/100ml?
5. In testing for presence of new bacteria, out the 50 patients examined the number of positive
tests was registered and probability of positive results was computed to be 0.455.
a. What is the probability of getting negative results out of these 100 patients?
b. Find number of patients with positive test out of 11 randomly selected?
c. Out of 50 patients what is the probability that a randomly selected patient will either be
positive or negative?
6. Consider the following table to answer questions that follows. It is assumed that the ratio of
male to female is 1:1.

Smoker Non-smoker Total

Male - 80 100
Femal - 90 -
e
Total - - -

a. Find probability that a randomly selected individual is male smoker?

b. Does proportion of male smoker greater than female smoker?
c. Suppose that number of male and female smokers increased by 5 persons each. Does
probability of female smoker increased relative to that of male? Work out both probabilities.
7. Two researchers A&B test all samples coming to laboratory for signs of new bacteria. Let
events:
A ={Researcher A makes positive diagnosis}
+

B = {Researcher B makes positive diagnosis}

+

Suppose Researcher A diagnosed 15% of samples as positive and Researcher B diagnosed 20%
of samples as positive. Suppose that 15% of the samples on which both researchers disagree on
test results were sent for further lab tests.
a. Find the proportion of samples that the two researchers agree on the negative test results.
b. What percentage of researcher A’s negative diagnosis is confirmed by researcher B.
8. Weight of babies born in Addis during the last one decade to mothers from different
background was observed and found to have the following parameters:

b. 𝜎 = 2.5
a. µ = 14 pounds
2

a. Find proportion of mothers with babies’ weight more than 20 pounds?

b. What proportion of mothers will have babies weight between 13 and 19 pounds?
c. What proportion of mothers will have babies weight different from 15 pounds?
d. Suppose that 16 mothers were selected from different health service providers and average
babies weight estimated to be =12 pounds, what proportion of mothers will have babies
with less than this mean (12)?
