1. Perovskite is a mineral containing C alcium, T itanium, and Oxygen. The unit cell is
cubic and has a Calcium atom at each corner, an Oxygen atom at each face center,
and a Titanium atom at the body -centered position. The atoms contribute to the
unit cell in the usual way (1/8 atom contribution for each atom at the corners,
etc.).
a. Identify the Bravais lattice for this crystal structure. What is the motif?
Write the point coordinates of the individual atoms in the motif. ( Hint:
Motif will contain more than one Oxygen atom ) (2 marks )
b. How many atoms of each type are there per unit cell ? (1 mark )
c. An alternative way of drawing the unit cell of perovskite has C alcium at the
body center of the cubic unit cell . W hat are th e positions of the Titanium
and Oxygen atoms in this representation of the unit cell ? ( 2 marks )
2. Write the Miller indices and s ketch the 12 members of the < 110> family for a
cubic crystal . ( 1 mark )
3. D etermine the Miller -Bravais indices of the vectors originati ng at the center of the
lower basal plane and ending at the vertices of the upper basal plane of the
hexagonal unit cell. (2 marks )
4. Determine the Miller indices of the cubic crystal plane that intersects the following
position coordinates. (2 mark s)

a. 100,1 2 4, 2 2 0
1 1
b. Optional: 001, 2 0 2, 111
5. Optional: Draw the he xagonal crysta l planes whose Miller -Bravais indices are :
a. (101̅1)
b. (011̅1)
c. (1̅21̅0)
d. (12̅12)
e. (21̅1̅1)
