Reflection on Research Essay Outline
This assignment did not as well as I had hoped, but it helped raise my standard of writing
for the future assignment. Although, there were certain parts of the assignment like the
secondary research that I really enjoyed, the rest of my assignment has a lot of room for
improvement. I missed out on very important points like incorrect citation of sources and
use of outside sources. I misunderstood the question that I need to focus more on the
secondary research as it would lead to learning. I also assumed that the quotations can be
from the outside sources. So, I spent a major part of my time on secondary research and
reading up on the subject from outside sources. Due to this, despite taking an extension, I
felt there was not enough time for me to improve my mistakes. After receiving feedback,
I realized that I used improper punctuation and incorrect MLA citation format. Apart
from this, in hindsight, the tone of my outline could be misinterpreted as hesitant rather
than assertive. For example, in “It is like saying boys should always be the ones to do the
saving, which is not really fair because women can be strong and do things for
themselves too”, the expression comes across as hesitant rather than assertive. Instead I
could have used “It is unfair to assume that boys should always do the saving; women are
strong and capable too” as it shows more confidence in the point addressed. Part of the
reason for this is that English it is not my first language and it can be challenging for me
to give words to my exact thoughts. I also have trouble with understanding the slight
differences in meaning caused by changing how sentences are phrased.
To prepare the future students for this assignment, I do have a few recommendations. The
first thing I would like to suggest them to pay more attention to the assignment
instructions, MLA citations and proper quotations. This is very easy to learn, but also
very easy to miss. For textual evidence, write the quotations from the exact versions of
the tales provided in the course content. Avoid any other adaptations at all costs and do
not just rely on the version of the stories that they already know since your childhood.
When mentioning the authors, use their last names instead of first. For any difficulties
regarding this assignment, they should feel free to ask questions during the class. They
may also email the professor and can arrange one on one meeting to clear your doubts. If
due to any circumstances, a student feels that they will not be able to finish their
assignment on time or you feel like you are not on the right path, they can ask for an
extension forty-eight hours before the time of submission. I would also like to suggest to
the new students, to review their work over and over to make it more concise, as this
assignment should be on the shorter side. Lastly, since this assignment is based on
portrayal of different social issues in Children’s literature, they should focus not just on
the linguistic aspects of the project but also on the learning part.
