CE383 ProblemSet5

The document is a problem set for a Structural Analysis course (CE383) from Spring 2019, focusing on the General Stiffness Method. It includes eight questions that require determining reactions, forces, joint displacements, and drawing shear and moment diagrams for various truss and beam structures. Specific material properties such as Young's modulus (E) and moment of inertia (I) are provided for calculations.

CE383 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

SPRING 2019

PROBLEM SET 5

Q1) Determine the reactions and forces in each member of the truss shown below by using
general stiffness method.

Q2) Using General Stiffness Method, determine the joint displacements and member
forces for the truss system shown below. E=200 GPa, A= 450 mm2 for all members.
Q3) Using General Stiffness Method, determine the reactions at the supports and draw
shear & moment diagrams. EI is constant.

Q4) Using General Stiffness Method, determine the reactions at the supports. Draw shear
& moment diagrams. Members are axially rigid.
E= 200 GPa, I= 420(106) mm4 for both members.

Q5) Using the General Stiffness Method,

a) Find the required cross-sectional area (in mm2) for the diagonal truss member which
has been added to the axially rigid L-shaped frame so that the lateral drift (i.e. sway)
is equal to 15 cm.
b) Find the force in the truss member for the given case.
Q6) Use the General Stiffness Method to determine all support reactions. Use the
minimum degrees of freedom necessary. EI=2x104 kN.m2. The beam is axially rigid.

Q7) For the given structures; determine the support reactions and the member end forces
by using the General Stiffness Method. Assume axial rigidity for these structures.

Q8) Use the General Stiffness Method to determine all support reactions. Assume axial
rigidity for the girder, take EI=2x105 kN.m2 and EA=4x106 kN.
