11. (i) Discuss dynamic similarity and show that Reynolds number is the ratio of the
inertia forces to viscous forces from the principles of dynamic similarity.
(ii) A tubular centrifuge is to separate chloro benzene with a density of 1090 kg/m3
from an aquous wash liquor having a density of 1010 kg/m3. The centrifuge has
an outer diameter of 200mm and rotate at 10000rpm. The free liquid surface
inside the bowl is 60 mm from the axis of rotation. If the centrifuge bowl is to
contain equal masses of two liquids, what should be the radial distance from the
axis to the top of the overflow of the heavy liquid?
12 (a) (i) Explain intensity and scale of turbulence.
(ii) State and derive Bernoulli’s equation. Discuss on the correction factors to
account for pump work and frictional losses.

(b) (i) Explain momentum correction factor.
(ii) Oil of specific gravity 0.8 and viscosity 0.8cP flows through a pipeline which
changes in size from 150mm diameter Section A to 300 mm diameter at section
B, Section B begin 4.5m higher than the section [Link] guage pressures at A & B
are 200 KN/m2 & 140 KN/m2 respectively, Determine the direction of flow and
energy loss when the pipe carries a discharge of 0.11m3/sec.
13. (a) Exhaust gases from apower plant passes through a 0.381m x 0.508m rectangular
duct at an average velocity of 15.24m/[Link] total length of the duct is 76.2m
and there are two 90 deg bends (Kf = 0.9). The gas is at room temperature and
about 1 [Link] properties are similar to those of air( Assume viscosity of air as
0.1 cP).Calculate the pressure drop in the duct and the power required to
overcome the pressure losses.

(b) (i). Show that the velocity distribution with respect to radius under laminar flow
for a Newtonian fluid is a parabola.
(ii). A fire truck is sucking water from a river and delivering through a long hose to
nozzle, from whoich water issues out at 30.48 m/sec. The total flow is 2000
lit/[Link] hose has a dia equivalent of 4” [Link] total length of the hose
connected for valves ,fittings,entrance,etc., is 91.44m. What power is required for
the fire trucks pump?
14.(a) (i) Discuss on Drag coefficients for different types of particles

15. (a) (i) With a neat sketch, explain the working of a venturimeter and compare it with
an orificemeter
(ii) A horizontal venturimeter having a throat diameter of 20mm is set in a 75mm
pipe through which water flows 25 deg [Link] is the flow rate of water
when mercury manometer reads 500mm?If 10% of the pressure difference is
permanently lost,find the power consumption on account of the meter.

(b) (i) Enumerate the factors that should be considered while selecting a pump for
particular operation
(ii) Discuss in detail the theory and working of a centrifugal pump.
