1.1 Research background
This outlines the research you are undertaking - project idea, the goals that need to
be achieved, why research is needed, the approach that you're planning to take
(basic methodology) and the expected outcome. While writing, have word count
guide in mind.
1.2 Research rationale
This explains the background and issues of your proposed research - how you
came to be interested in this subject, summaries of what you know of the existing
literature in this area, perhaps identifying where it does and does not provide
enlightenment on what you are interested in. Most importantly, you must make a
convincing case as to why your research would create valuable and useful
knowledge.
1.3 Research aim
Written in broad terms in one or two-line sentence. Say, 25 words. It sets
out what you hope to achieve at the end of the project.
1.4 Research objectives
Unlike aims, these should be specific statements that define measurable outcomes.
Advisable to use action verbs when formulating objectives. Remember, the level 6
approved verbs are; assess, analyse, evaluate, and examine.
1.5 Research questions
This is about what problems or issues you wish to explore and why you wish to
explore them. You should have an answerable question that is clear and
sufficiently well-defined/focused for you to do the research implied within an
appropriate time frame. You can simply put the questions in the question format
to make it concise and aligned.
