Dear Parent

In preparation for your child beginning at Kamuzu Academy we have

prepared a series of information sheets for you. I hope they will all be
helpful and give you an insight into the working of the Academy.

Could I ask you to pay particular attention to:

(a) “New students to Kamuzu Academy”

(b) “The Student Handbook” which contains the School Rules, Code of
Conduct, Dress Code and Mobile Phone Policy.

Please read these with your child and discuss the necessity for good
behaviour. We believe our excellent results are partially a result of our
emphasis on good, polite behaviour. This helps us to create the positive
learning environment which we have. I will go over the Code of Conduct
with Year 1 students upon their arrival but it will help your child if you
have read it with him/her before arriving at the Academy.

Dear Parent

NEW STUDENTS COMING TO KAMUZU ACADEMY

Please arrive on Thursday 29th August, 2024. The following information

is to help new parents/students understand some of the general aspects
of Kamuzu Academy.

UNIFORM: All personal clothes and uniform should be clearly

labelled or marked. Hair should be cut according to Academy standards
(please see ‘Dress Code’ in the Student Handbook)

FOOD/TUCK: This is allowed at the discretion of the Senior

Housemaster and Senior Housemistress. There are no facilities for
storing perishable foodstuffs. The Academy has a student Tuck Shop
which sells food, drinks, stationary and other items which students may
need. Providing students with large quantities of foodstuffs is not
necessary and encourages them to eat a poor diet besides being
wasteful.

PREP: This is compulsory. It lasts for two hours each weekday evening
and is carried out in silence in the students’ own rooms.
Time: 6.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m.

EXEATS (Written permission to leave the Academy Campus): Exeats

may be given by the House staff when necessary. No student may leave
the Academy without permission; doing so is regarded as a serious
breach of regulations.

VISITORS: The school appreciates prior notice by email to the Deputy

Housemaster (P). Visits by parents and family are welcome but should
be arranged so as not to disrupt the working day. Students normally
work or have sports activities on Saturday mornings. Visitors are not
allowed into the hostels without the expressed permission of Deputy
Housemaster (P).

HOME VISITS: Students may go home for the weekend by prior

arrangement. The school will require written parental consent in the
event of other family members or friends wishing to take students off
the premises. If a driver is sent to collect a student that driver should
be known to the student and carry written authorisation from the
parent.

END OF TERM: The terms end on the dates published in the Academy
Calendar. It disrupts work at the Academy seriously if parents accede
to students’ requests to leave early at the end of term without valid
reasons. The frequently used student claims that ‘they have finished
all their work’ or that ‘their friends have gone home’ are invariably
untrue. Parents are kindly requested to help us in this.

FLIGHTS: The Academy will undertake to transport students to the

airport in Lilongwe if the student(s) parents are living outside the
country. The Academy will not accept responsibility for the purchase
of air tickets and confirmation of flights. The acquisition of health and
any other certification necessary for travel is also the responsibility of
parents. Parents should remember that we are two hours by road from
the airport and therefore should not book students on very early flights
– earlier than 9.30 a.m.

CLINIC: This is fully staffed and any medical information should be

conveyed to the Clinical Officer or Matron at the clinic. Except in
exceptional circumstances ALL medicines are controlled and stored in
the clinic.
A medical form has been provided as part of this joining pack. It is
crucial that you complete it and provide all the details asked about.
Having completed it, please send it to my office. This is very important.

POCKET MONEY: This should be handed to the
Housemaster/Housemistress for safe-keeping. The school cannot take
responsibility for money kept by students in their rooms.

We recommend K8,000.00 per week as being a reasonable amount of

pocket money. Large sums are unnecessary and encourage wastefulness.

TELEPHONES: Kamuzu Academy is covered by both Airtel and TNM

networks. Detailed notes about use of mobile phones can be found in
the Students’ Handbook. It is important to note that students are only
allowed limited access to their phones at the moment to help them
concentrate on school work and to help them sleep in good time.

USEFUL ITEMS TO BRING:

• One set of smart casual clothes for attending evening Chapel and
formal House Dinners. For boys this should include a shirt and tie.
• Torch/batteries and/or battery charger – the hostels are covered
by generator back-up in the event of power failure (which at times
is more of a rule than an exception). A torch is useful outside the
hostel, e.g. visiting the Clinic after dark.
• Bag for carrying books, etc – essential.
• Extra Pens/Pencils/Mathematical Instruments.
• Any necessary medicines plus a note of explanation handed to the
Clinic.
• An umbrella /rain jacket (for the rainy season) – warmer clothing,
e.g. vests, for the third term (Mtunthama is higher than Blantyre
or Lilongwe and, consequently, can be quite cool at night in May and
June).
• Pyjamas or other night attire.
• Toothbrush/toothpaste/soap, shaving kit (if necessary).
• Bath Towels.
• Plate, cup, cutlery (for use in hostels) – students should not borrow
items from the Dining Hall for use in the hostels.
• A wrist watch.
• Calculator with basic scientific functions.
• 1 small padlock with at least two keys – cheap imported padlocks
should be avoided as they tend to have identical keys.
• Shoe cleaning materials.

Students found possessing these may be summarily dismissed from

Kamuzu Academy. Consumption of alcohol or use of drugs may also be
punishable by dismissal.

INSURANCE

Students’ personal property is insured against theft but in order to

claim a break-in has to be proven. Individually expensive items like
mobile phones, lap tops should be insured separately by the parent.
Students are covered by personal accident insurance when at school or
in transit to or from school. This covers medical expenses at a private
hospital if necessary. There is a one-off annual premium of K50,000
payable in January each year. Academy Management feels that this
offers good value.

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENT POCKET MONEY FROM ACCOUNTS

This causes severe problems in our Accounts Department because of the unpredictable
amount of petty cash required at any one time. Pocket money will only be given if the
following criteria are met:

1. A letter must be sent to the Deputy Headmaster (Pastoral) giving details of the
total amount set aside for pocket money each term and the maximum sum allowed
each week. This latter may not exceed K8,000.00. Telephone messages not followed
by written confirmation will not be acted upon.

2. Pocket money will only be given if the account of the student is in credit. Requests
for advances against future payments will not be entertained due to problems of
cash flow.

3. Siblings will only be allowed to draw against each other’s accounts if the parent has
specified that this may happen.

4. Requests for payment should be submitted by the student or his/her

Housemaster/mistress to the Deputy Headmaster Pastoral’s office by Wednesday
of each week and payment will be made by the Accounts Department on Fridays only.

Discipline and Behaviour

The student accepts and undertakes to comply with the ‘School Rules’, ‘Code of Conduct’,

Failure to do so may result in disciplinary sanctions being taken. In the event of serious or
persistent misconduct the Headmaster may temporarily exclude or, with the consent of the
Chairman of the Board of Governors, permanently exclude a student.

attend Kamuzu Academy. Parents are asked to make sure their
children’s uniform is in good condition at the beginning of each term.

Kamuzu Academy has two school uniforms: Grey/Cream which is worn

for everyday purposes and Green/Gold which is only used on special
occasions. These uniforms can be purchased from some designated

Academy. Students should provide their own. Please provide two pairs
of bedsheets so that the student will have one pair to use even when
(s)he sends a pair for laundry.

A comprehensive decision concerning laundry of school uniform and

students’ person clothes will soon be made, and you will be notified.
Currently, only school uniform was considered; but now we are discussing
to make it better for our students. We will let you know once that
decision is made.
