Fields Lab Assignment 03

The lab assignment involves analyzing a concentric transmission line with given dimensions and a DC current of 10 A. Students are required to calculate magnetic field intensity, power losses using Poynting Theorem, and compare results with Quickfield software for both DC and AC currents. The assignment emphasizes understanding current density differences between DC and AC cases, particularly the skin effect at different frequencies.

For the concentric transmission line shown in the figure below; let 𝑎 = 5 𝑚𝑚 , 𝑏 = 7 𝑚𝑚 &
𝑐 = 10 𝑚𝑚 and assume that the length is long enough to be assumed as infinitely long conductor.
A DC current of magnitude 𝐼 = 10 𝐴𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑠 flows in the line. Take the conductivity
𝜎 = 107 𝑆𝑖𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑠

a) Without proof, state the expressions of the magnetic field intensity (H) in all regions.
b) Use MATLAB to plot (H) vs the radius of the conductor.

c) Calculate power losses in the inner and outer conductors separately using Poynting
Theorem and compare the result with the losses calculated using 𝐼 2 𝑅.

d) Using the Quickfield software :

o Plot the magnetic field showing its direction
o Plot the Poynting Vector showing its direction
o Plot the current density
o Draw an XY plot for (H) along the radius of the conductor
o Use (Local Values) tab to find the power losses per unit volume in the inner
and outer conductors. Compare the total losses to the values obtained in (b).

{Hint: Choose problem type (AC Magnetics) and put 𝑓 = 0}

e) If the current flowing in the line is AC with the same magnitude and with 𝑓 = 50 𝐻𝑧.

o Plot the magnetic field showing its direction

o Plot the total current density
o Compare the current density with the current density in case of DC current. Find
an explanation for the difference between the two cases.

Current density in both DC and AC cases are pretty much the same. It was expected of skin effect to take
place in the AC case but the frequency is too low for such phenomenon to happen. Changing the
dimensions or frequency is advised.
