II. Answer the following:
1. If a seed is inserted upside down into soil, in which direction will its stem and roots

soil. This shows a response to stimuli, also called tropism in plants. The property of a plant
stem to grow towards the source of light is called phototropism. The property of the roots to
grow in the direction of the earth is called geotropism.
2. Fire needs oxygen, spreads from one place to another, and reacts to changes around it.
Does this mean fire is alive? Explain your answer.
Ans: No, fire is not alive. Although fire needs oxygen, spreads from one place to another and
reacts to changes in its surroundings, it does not have all the characteristics of living
things. Fire cannot grow on its own in a controlled way, cannot reproduce, and does not
have cells.
3. A seed is planted in soil, but is never watered. Another seed is kept in a damp cotton ball
without soil. Which seed is likely to germinate first? Why?
Ans: The seed kept in a damp cotton ball is likely to germinate first. Germination requires

4. Rehana says a wooden log is non-living because it cannot move, while Tiana argues it is
living because it comes from a tree. Do you agree with Rehana or Tiana? Justify your
answer.
Ans: I agree with Rehana. A wooden log is non-living because it cannot perform the basic
life processes. It does not grow, respire, respond to stimuli, reproduce, or excrete. Even
though the log comes from a living tree, once it is cut off, it loses all characteristics of life.
5. If a plant produces seeds but none of the seeds grow into new plants, what could be the
reasons? How would this affect the life cycle of that plant?
Ans: Lack of water, unsuitable temperature, poor soil conditions, and seed damage could
be the possible reasons. If seeds do not germinate, no new plants are produced. The plant
species may not continue its life cycle, and over time, the population may decrease or die
out.
