Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 8
MATATAG Curriculum
Topic: Elements and Compounds
Grade Level: Grade 8
Time Allotment: 1 hour
Quarter: 1st Quarter
Teaching Approach: Inquiry-Based (5Es Model)
I. Learning Competencies (MATATAG-Aligned)
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Distinguish elements from compounds based on their composition.
2. Describe the basic characteristics of elements and compounds.
3. Cite examples of elements and compounds found in everyday life.
4. Appreciate the importance of elements and compounds in daily living.
II. Learning Resources
Periodic Table of Elements
Visual aids / pictures of common substances
Chart paper / manila paper
Marker
PowerPoint (optional)
III. Teaching Procedure (5E's Model)
A. ENGAGE (Motivation – 10 minutes)
Teacher’s Activity:
Show pictures of water, salt, oxygen tank, gold jewelry.
Ask:
“Ano ang pagkakaiba ng tubig at ginto?”
“Pareho ba silang gawa sa iisang substance?”
Learner's Activity:
Students share ideas based on prior knowledge.
Learners give guesses and observations.
Purpose:
Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity about substances.
B. EXPLORE (Activity – 10 minutes)
Activity: “Classify Me!”
Procedure:
Divide the class into small groups.
Give each group a list of substances:
Oxygen (O₂)
Iron (Fe)
Water (H₂O)
Salt (NaCl)
Carbon (C)
Ask them to group the substances based on similarities.
Guide Questions:
Which substances are made of only one kind of atom?
Which are made of two or more elements?
Learner's Activity:
Group discussion and classification.
Present results briefly.
C. EXPLAIN (Concept Discussion – 15 minutes)
Teacher’s Input:
Elements
Pure substances made of only one kind of atom.
Cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Examples: Oxygen (O), Gold (Au), Iron (Fe)
Compounds
Substances formed when two or more elements chemically combine.
Have fixed composition and properties different from their elements.
Examples: Water (H₂O), Salt (NaCl), Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
Use visual aids and periodic table.
Learner's Activity:
Students ask questions.
Take down key points.
D. ELABORATE (Application – 10 minutes)
Activity: “Element or Compound in Real Life”
Task:
Each group lists:
3 elements and their uses
3 compounds and their uses
Relate to daily life (home, school, community).
Sample Answers:
Oxygen – breathing
Iron – construction
Water – drinking and cleaning
Purpose:
Strengthen understanding by applying concepts to real-life situations.
E. EVALUATE (Assessment – 10 minutes)
A. Written Assessment
Identify whether the following is an Element or Compound:
1. Gold
2. Water
3. Oxygen
4. Salt
5. Carbon Dioxide
B. Performance-Based
Oral explanation:
“Explain in one sentence the difference between an element and a compound.”
IV. Assignment
Research and list 5 elements and 5 compounds found inside your home.
Write one sentence explaining their importance.
V. Reflection
Which part of the lesson engaged students the most?
Were students able to clearly differentiate elements and compounds?
What strategies can be improved for the next lesson?
