Problem of the Week
Problem C
A Rectangle in a Circle
Points A and B are on the circumference of a circle with radius 10 cm and centre C
such that AC ⊥ BC . Point D lies inside the circle on BC such that BD = 2 cm.
Point E lies on the circumference of the circle, on the minor arc AB, such that
DE ⊥ BC . Point F lies inside the circle on AC such that CDEF forms a rectangle.
Determine the distance from A to F .

The Pythagorean Theorem states, “In a right-angled triangle, the square of the
length of hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) equals the sum of the
squares of the lengths of the other two sides.”
In the right-angled triangle shown, c is the hypotenuse, a and b are the lengths of
the other two sides, and c2 = a2 + b2.
