Several Variable Tutorial 3

This document is a tutorial for MA 629 (Real Analysis of Several Variables) that includes exercises on finding partial derivatives, directional derivatives, and analyzing the continuity and differentiability of various functions. It covers specific functions in multiple variables and includes tasks such as calculating gradients and Jacobians. The tutorial also addresses the differentiability of functions at specific points and provides conditions for differentiability.

MA 629 (Real Analysis of Several Variables)

Tutorial 3 (Semester II, 2025 - 2026)

1. For each of the following functions, find the partial derivatives and ∇f .
2
(a) f (x, y) = e4x−y + log(x2 + y)
(b) f (x, y, z) = x2 ey/z
∥x∥2
(c) f (x) = e− 2 , x ∈ Rn
2. Find the directional derivative of f at the given point in the given direction.
(a) f (x, y) = 4xy + 3y 2 at (1, 1) in the direction (2, −1).
(b) f (x, y) = sin(πxy) + x2 y at (1, −2) in the direction (3/5, 4/5).
(c) f (x, y, z) = x2 e−yz at (1, 0, 0) in the direction (1, 1, 1).
3. Show that the function f (x, y) = |x| + |y| is continuous, but not differentiable at (0, 0).
4. Let ( 2
−y 2
xy xx2 +y 2 if (x, y) ̸= (0, 0),
f (x, y) =
0 if (x, y) = (0, 0).
∂f ∂f ∂f ∂f
Show that (x, 0) = 0 = (0, y), (0, y) = −y and (x, 0) = x. Show that f is
∂x ∂y ∂x ∂y
differentiable at (0, 0).
5. Let (

∂f ∂f
Find (0, 0) and ∂y
(0, 0). Show that f is not differentiable at (0, 0).
∂x
6. Let xyz

if (x, y, z) ̸= (0, 0, 0),
f (x, y, z) = ,
0 if (x, y, z) = (0, 0, 0).
where α ∈ R a constant. Show that f is differentiable at (0, 0, 0) if and only if α < 1.
7. For each of the following functions, find the derivative Df and the indicated Jacobian matrix
and Jacobian (wherever possible).
(a) f : R2 → R2 , f (x, y) = (x2 + y, 2xy − y 2 ).
(b) f : R2 → R3 , f (x, y) = (xy, x2 + xy 2 , x3 y).
(c) f : R3 → R3 , f (r, θ, ϕ) = (r cos θ sin ϕ, r sin θ sin ϕ, r cos ϕ).
