Imagine of existence of a space where teenagers from all walks of life have an

opportunity to come together not only to play but also to grow and become all rounded

individuals. A place where teenagers are allowed to compete freely making them to achieve

greater heights. This a dream that can be actualized through our proposed sports program. It’s a

program that aims to provide teenagers regardless of their background a chance to exploit and

use their sports skills. The target population for this proposed program will be teenagers who are

between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. The sports program will focus on teenagers from all

backgrounds therefore giving children from the underserved communities an opportunity to

participate in a quality sports program as well as reaping the benefits that will come with the

sports program such as social interaction and physical activity (Dass, 2010). There are a number

of characteristics that are unique to the target group that make them the most suitable group for

the proposed sports program. Some of those characteristics include; they learn easily, they have

few responsibilities therefore they will focus on soccer and they will benefit from sports program

through acquiring skills such as teamwork, flexibility, motor and coordination skills. The

program seeks to address a number of social problems that teenagers are likely to face in the

society such as drug and substance abuse among the youths, mental health issues and youths

ending up in the streets. The program also seeks to provide a platform for the youths to identify

their talents at a younger age as well as nurturing them.

The teenagers between the age of 13 and 19 years are very productive. Making use of

such productivity for instance by engaging ng them in a sports program will be a great way

through which the young talents they have can be nurtured and developed into professional

sports men and women. In the current world, technology has taken the better part of our

teenagers which denies them an opportunity to engage in physical activities. According to a

3

research that was conducted in the United States, it was found out that the average time that a

teen spend on their electronic devices is approximately 4.8 hours per day which is way lower

than the time they utilize on physical activities (Kwok et al., 2017). Coming up with a sports

program with give teenagers not only an opportunity for physical activity but also social

interactions which will lead to creation of meaningful relationships and friendships. Furthermore,

the sports program will keep the teenagers away from negative consequences. One of such

consequences is increased mental health issues among the teenagers (Myer et al., 2015). Studies

show a correlation between increased mental health issues such as depression and continued use

of social media (Cone et al., 2020). Another challenge that the sports program will solve will be

decreased physical activity among the teenagers. When teenagers spend most of their time

watching televisions or using their phones, there remains little time or no time at all for outdoor

activities and physical activities which eventually results to physical inactivity and obesity,

which are in turn risk factors for chronic diseases. Lastly the program will seek to address the

problem of drug and substance abuse among the youths by keeping them busy and keeping the

teenagers away from the streets by providing them an alternative activity that they can engage in.

The sports program will seek to offer the best services in terms of training, mentorship

and wellbeing of the players. Therefore, there will be a pool of human resources in different

fields to ensure that all of the needs of the players are attended to. The staff that will be hired

will include; trainers, professional coaches, support staff, clinical psychologists, retired soccer

players and others. The requirements for the different staffs and employees of the soccer

program will vary according to the profession. Each staff member will be required to have

attained the requisite academic qualifications in their field of specialty and also experiences of
4

the staff members will be considered. The recruiting of the employees will be free and fair and

will give priority to those from around the community.

The proposed sports program is soccer. Soccer is a sports that is quite dynamic and it can

offer a number of opportunities that will benefit both the teenagers who will be participating as

well as the community that surrounds them. The long terms goals of the soccer program will not

only be focused on the field but will also extend to positively impacting the lives of the players,

their families and the communities where they come from in multiple dimensions. First the

program aims at offering professional soccer training to the teenagers. In most parts of the world,

talents of young soccer players are wasted due to lack of qualified and experienced coaches

(Coskun, 2021). This program will address this problem by providing the players will all the

required amenities, resources and professional coaches that will ensure that the players get

quality training as well as ensuring that their talents are nurtured. The soccer program also aims

at nurturing players by teaching them values of teamwork, communication, good manners, future

goal setting, developing their self-confidence and esteem, stress management, coping

mechanisms and leadership. Through collaboration and teamwork, the teenagers will be in a

position to communicate effectively and work together towards achieving the goals of the team

in harmony. The program will also give the youth an opportunity to lead which will enable them

to develop their confidence, decision making skills and also a chance to motivate others. The

program will also promote mental wellbeing through teaching them skills such as stress relieving

skills and mood boost, mechanisms that they can use in coping with different situations and

lastly developing their self-confidence and esteem.

Another long term goal of the soccer program will be improving the technical skills of

the players as well as encouraging them to live a healthy life style. For the players to remain
5

competent, their technical skills need to be improved through constant training and mentorship.

The program will ensure that there is enough human resource that will provide all the support

that the players need. Each player will be assigned to a group of technical staff whose sole

responsibility will be to ensure that the player improves in all aspects including technical skills

and their overall wellbeing. Healthy living will be another area of focus for the soccer program.

A healthy lifestyle is essential for every player. The program will foster the love for physical

activity. This will be done through three main ways which include; habit formation, health

lifestyle choices and discovery of passion. The program will aim at developing in players a live

long love for soccer and physical activity. Regular participation of the players in physical

activities will lead to reduced health risk, a good body image and improved fitness that will make

them to be flexible on the field (Knudson, 2018). Making health lifestyle choice such as

exercising will help players to lead health lives. Lastly, discovery of passion will involve putting

the players in an environment where they can decide the career route they will take such as

ending up as coaches, referees or sports club managers.

The last long term goal of the sports program will be promotion, partnerships and

community service. The program will reward its best players by connecting them with available

opportunities in big soccer clubs. Those players who will perform exemplary will be given a

chance to play in the big clubs. The soccer program will also partner with other soccer programs

to ensure that its players remain up to date and at the same time they are exposed to other playing

environments. This will be done through partnering with other soccer programs in neighboring

communities. Lastly, the soccer program will be dedicated to giving back to the community

through involvement in different community services. The teenagers will engage in volunteer

work and outreach activities in their community. They will use their passion for soccer to impact
6

the community for instance spreading awareness about a certain disease and ways to prevent it

through soccer matches.

Evaluation of the soccer program will be a comprehensive process that will tell whether

the soccer program is achieving some of the set targets and goals or not. The results from the

evaluation of the soccer program will provide critical information on the areas that will need

improvements and changes to make the program even better. The program evaluation will

involve two main parts that is evaluation of the process and evaluation of the outcomes. Process

evaluation will be done through attendance scores, surveys, interviews and records. Attendance

scores will be useful in evaluating the number of times the player has attended training sessions

as well as mentorship sessions. It will be useful in showing the level of commitment of the player

towards realizing the goals that are set by the soccer program. Surveys and interviews will play a

critical role in gathering of information from the players, their parents and the general public.

The information gathered will inform the soccer committee on how others feel about the program

and the impacts it has had on the community. Lastly, process evaluation will also be done

through record keeping. Information about the players right from when they enter the soccer

program will be collected and recorded. Comparisons will be made over time to ascertain

whether the players are making improvements or not. Outcome evaluation will involve two main

things that is assessment of the fitness of the players and assessment of the skills of the players.

Assessment of the level of fitness of the players will be done to be able to tell the amount of time

that the players invest in physical activities. On the other hand, assessment of the skills of the

players will be done through comparing the skills of the players at the start of the program and in

intervals of two weeks or a month to note if there is any improvement. Process evaluation will be

done after every two weeks while outcome evaluation will be done on monthly basis.
7

Summarily, the soccer program aims at creating a conducive environment for teenagers

aged between 13 and 19 years and providing an opportunity for them to nurture and use their

talents constructively. The program focuses on the teenagers because of the risks that they are

exposed to especially if they are left free. It will help them to make good use of their time

through engaging in soccer activities. This will in turn make the teenagers busy hence keeping

them way from the streets, protecting them from the menace of drug and substance abuse and

lastly ensuring that their mental health is given priority therefore reducing mental health

problems. The soccer program will further benefit the players personally through the provision of

training and mentorship sessions, provision of the necessary amenities and offer them an

opportunity to end up as professional players. The community will also benefit through reduced

cases of drug and substance abuse in the community, healthier community and also from the

activities of the soccer program.
