Tutorial 04

The document contains a tutorial sheet focused on thin cylinders, presenting four questions related to stress analysis under various loading conditions. It includes calculations for principal stresses, shear stress, pressure exerted by fluids, and permissible steam pressure in a boiler. Each question is followed by a space for solutions, indicating a practical application of theoretical concepts in mechanics.

TUTORIAL SHEET 04

TOPIC: THIN CYLINDER

Question 01. A thin cylindrical tube with closed ends is subjected to an internal pressure of 8
MPa. The tube is of 90 mm internal diameter and 6 mm thickness. Determine the maximum
and minimum principal stresses and the maximum shear stress if a torque of 4000 N-m is also
applied to the tube.

Solution 01

Question 02. Consider a cylinder element of large radius with axial (x direction) and torque
loadings which produce shear and normal stress component as shown in Figure. Construct
Mohr’s circle for this element and determine the magnitude and the orientation of the principal
stress.
Solution 02

Question 03. A cylindrical shell 90 cm long 20 cm internal diameter having thickness of metal
as 8 mm is filled with fluid at atmospheric pressure. If an additional 20 𝑐𝑚3 of fluid is pumped
into cylinder, find
i. The pressure exerted by the fluid on the cylinder
ii. The hoop stress induced.
𝑁
Take 𝐸 = 2 × 105 𝑚𝑚2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜇 = 0.3

Solution 03
Question 04. A boiler of 1.6 m diameter is made of 20 mm thick steel plates. Determine the
permissible steam pressure in the boiler if the efficiency of the longitudinal joint of the boiler
is 80% and maximum tensile stress in the steel plates is not to exceed 80 MPa. What will be
the circumferential stress in the solid plate section at this pressure? Also calculate the
longitudinal stress in the plate section through the rivets of the circumferential joint if the
efficiency of the joint is 70%.
