Tutorial 05

The document contains a tutorial sheet focused on the mechanics of cylinders with hemispherical ends, presenting four problems related to internal pressure, stresses, and changes in dimensions for various cylindrical structures. Each question provides specific parameters such as dimensions, material properties, and required calculations for stresses and volume changes under given conditions. Solutions are expected for each problem based on the provided data and material properties.

TUTORIAL SHEET 04

TOPIC: CYLINDER WITH HEMISPHERICAL ENDS

Q1. A thin bronze cylinder of 250 mm internal diameter and 6 mm thick is wound with a single
layer of 1.5-mm-thick steel tape under a tensile stress of 100 N/mm2. Find the maximum
internal pressure if the hoop stress in the cylinder is not to exceed 50 N/mm2. Determine also
the tensile stress in steel tape. For bronze E = 117N/mm2, v = 0 33 and for steel E = 208kN/mm2.
Solution 1
Q2. A 15-cm-long bronze tube with closed ends has a diameter of 75 mm and a wall thickness of 3 mm.
With no internal pressure, the tube just fits between the two rigid end walls. Calculate the longitudinal
and tangential stresses in the cylinder for an internal pressure of 2.5N/mm2. E = 100 kN/mm2, µ = 0.32.

Solution 02
Q3. A cylindrical shell 1m in diameter and 3m in length has a metal thickness of 10 mm. If it is subjected
to an internal pressure of 3 N/mm2, determine the change in length, change in diameter and change in
volume.
Take E=2x105 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio=0.3
Solution 03.
Q4. A thin cylinder steel vessel has hemispherical ends. The overall length of the vessel is 500 mm.
The outside diameter of the cylinder is 100 mm with thickness of metal 5 mm. Calculate the change in
volume of the vessel, when it is subjected to internal pressure of 15 MPa.
Take E = 200 Gpa; Poission’s ratio = 0.3
