Problem Set 3 Spring2020

This document is an assignment for the course CE 222 Engineering Mechanics II: Dynamics at Middle East Technical University, detailing various problems related to rigid body kinematics. It includes 15 problems that require calculations of angular velocities, accelerations, and velocities of different mechanical systems involving gears, disks, and linkages. The assignment aims to apply principles of dynamics to solve real-world engineering scenarios.

Assignment #3 — Rigid Body Kinematics

1/ When only two gears are in mesh, the driving gear A and the driven gear B will always turn in
opposite directions. In order to get them to turn in the same direction an idler gear C is used. In the
case shown, determine the angular velocity of gear B when t = 5 s, if gear A starts from rest and has
an angular acceleration of A = (3t+2) rad/s2, where t is in seconds.

2/ The disk is originally rotating at 0 = 8 rad/s. If it is subjected to a constant angular acceleration of

 = 6 rad/s2 , determine the magnitudes of the velocity and the n and t components of acceleration
of point B just after the wheel undergoes 2 revolutions.

3/ A motor gives gear A an angular acceleration of A = (4t3) rad/s2, where t is in seconds. If this gear
is initially turning at (A)0= 20 rad/s, determine the angular velocity of gear B when t = 2 s.

rB=0.15 m, rA=0.05m

4/ At a given instant the wheel is rotating with the angular motions shown. Determine the
acceleration of the collar at A at this instant.

5/ The mechanism used in a marine engine consists of a single crank AB and two connecting rods BC
and BD. Determine the velocity of the piston at C the instant the crank is in the position shown and
has an angular velocity of 5 rad/s.

6/ The square plate is confined within the slots at A and B. When  = 30°, point A is moving at v = 8
m/s. Determine the velocity at point C and D at the instant.

7/ The ends of the bar AB are confined to move along the paths shown. At a given instant, A has a
velocity of 8 m/s and an acceleration of 3 m/s 2. Determine the angular velocity and angular
acceleration of AB at this instant.

8/ Determine the angular velocity of the telescoping link AB for the position shown where the driving
links have the angular velocities indicated.

9/ A four-bar linkage is shown in the figure (the ground “link” OC is considered the fourth bar). If the
drive link OA has a counterclockwise angular velocity ɷ=10 rad/s, determine the angular velocities of
links AB and BC.

10/ For the instant represented, when crank OA passes the horizontal position, determine the
velocity of the center G of link AB.

11/ If link AB of the four-bar linkage has a constant counterclockwise angular velocity of 40 rad/s
during an interval which includes the instant represented, determine the angular acceleration of AO
and the acceleration of point D. Express your results in vector notation.

12/ For a short interval of motion, link OA has a constant angular velocity of 4 rad/s. Determine the
angular acceleration of link AB for the instant when OA is parallel to the horizontal axis through B.

13/ If the piston rod of the hydraulic cylinder C has a constant upward velocity of 0.5 m/s, calculate
the acceleration of Point D for the position where ɵ is 45ᵒ

14/ The 9-m steel beam is being hoisted from its horizontal position by the two cables attached at A
and B. If the initial angular accelerations of the hoisting drums are α1= 0.5 rad/s2 and α2= 0.2 rad/s2 in
the directions shown, determine the corresponding angular acceleration α of the beam, the
acceleration of C, and the distance b from B to a point P on the beam centerline which has no
acceleration.

15/ The disk is moving to the left such that it has an angular acceleration α= 8 rad/s2 and angular
velocity ɷ = 3 rad/s at the instant shown. If it does not slip at A, determine the acceleration of point
B and D.
