■ Lesson Plan: We Must / We Must Not / We Mustn’t

Grade: 4
Duration: 45 minutes
Topic: Rules and Responsibilities
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, students’ notebooks

1■■ Warm-up (5 minutes) – Class Rules Chat


Ask students: “What rules do we follow in school?” (Let them answer: listen to the
teacher, don’t run, etc.) Write some examples on the board.
Explain that today they will learn how to use must, must not, and mustn’t to talk
about rules.

2■■ Presentation (10 minutes)


Explain:
We must + verb → Something important we have to do.
Example: We must listen to the teacher.

We must not + verb → Something we are not allowed to do.


Example: We must not fight.

We mustn’t + verb → Same as “must not.”


Example: We mustn’t be late.

3■■ Guided Practice (10 minutes) – Complete the Sentences


Write on the board and ask students to fill in with must / must not / mustn’t:
• We ______ respect our parents.
• We ______ eat in class.
• We ______ do our homework.
• We ______ be rude to others.
• We ______ brush our teeth.

4■■ Pair Activity (10 minutes) – Good or Bad Rules Game


Say or write examples. Students respond with We must or We must not:
• ■ Raise our hand before speaking → We must raise our hand.
• ■ Run in the classroom → We must not run in the classroom.
• ■ Help our friends → We must help our friends.

5■■ Writing Practice (8 minutes)


Ask students to write 5 sentences (3 with we must, 2 with we must not/mustn’t)
in their notebooks. Example:
• We must keep our classroom clean.
• We must not shout in class.

6■■ Wrap-up (2 minutes)


Recap: “We must” = something we should do. “We must not / mustn’t” = something
we shouldn’t do. Ask a few students to share one ‘must’ and one ‘must not’
sentence aloud. ■
