Difference between Microprocessor and
Microcontrollers
Microcontrollers Microprocessors
The defining characteristic A microprocessor consists
of a microcontroller is that of a CPU and several
it incorporates all of the supporting chips that
necessary computing supply the memory, serial
components onto a single interface, inputs and
chip. The CPU, memory, outputs, timers, and other
interrupt controls, timer, necessary components.
serial ports, bus controls,
Microprocessor and CPU
I/O peripheral ports, and

any other necessary
components are all present synonymous. You can think
on the same chip and no of a microprocessor as a
external circuits are single integrated circuit
required. chip that contains a CPU.
That chip can connect to
other external peripherals
such as a control bus or
data bus that provide
binary data inputs and
receive outputs from the
microprocessor (also in
binary).
It can be referred as small It gives computing power to
computer more complex and
powerful computers.
Microcontrollers are self Microprocessors need
contains other supporting input
output devices to work.
Works on low power Need comparatively high
power
Performs only limited Performs many

task
Less in cost Comparatively high in cost
Low clock speed less than High clock speed 4 Ghz
200 MHz
Generally used in Use in Mobiles, Tablets, PC,
embedded systems Laptops and high end
computing systems
Advantages of the microcontroller:
Low time required for performing operation.
It is easy to use, troubleshooting and system
maintenance is straightforward.
At an equivalent time, many tasks are often
performed therefore the human effect are often saved.
Processor chip is extremely small.
The microcontroller is easily to interface additional
RAM, ROM and I/O ports.
Cost and size of the system is less.
Once microcontroller is programmed then they can
be prevented from reprogramming.
It is easy to use, troubleshooting and system
maintaining is straightforward.
Disadvantages of the microcontroller :
It is generally utilized in micro equipment.
It has a complex structure.
Microcontroller cannot interface a better power
device directly.
Number of executions is limited.
As every Microcontroller does not have analog I/O so
there are issues related.
Applications of Microcontrollers
