ABSTRACT

This study investigates the climate dynamics of very heavy rainfall events within the

Koforidua metropolis, situated in Ghana. The region is located in the eastern region of

Ghana and characterized by a tropical climate. Koforidua has in recent years

experienced increasing frequencies and intensities of extreme rainfall events, posing

significant threats to infrastructure, agriculture, water resources, and human

livelihoods. This research seeked to understand the patterns, variability and potential

drivers of these heavy rainfall occurrences through a combination of historical climate

data analysis. By applying statistical techniques and threshold based rainfall intensity

classification, the study identified trends and distribution of very heavy rainfall in

Koforidua. The study aimed at enhancing local capacity for climate risk assessment,

inform sustainable urban planning, improved farming, disaster risk management and

water resource policy. Ultimately, the study contributed to broader efforts in climate

resilience by providing insight into the meteorological behaviour of very heavy

rainfall in a rapidly urbanizing tropical city.
