MAJOR 3- EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT
MODULE 2- INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID
First Aid is the immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly
taken ill, before professional medical help becomes available. Its main goal is to preserve
life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. First aid is not a
substitute for medical treatment but serves as an essential first response that can make a
significant difference in emergencies.
The objectives of first aid are often summarized as the “3 Ps”:
1. Preserve Life – Keep the victim alive by ensuring an open airway, controlling
bleeding, and maintaining circulation.
2. Prevent the Condition from Worsening – Protect the casualty from further harm,
avoid complications, and stabilize their condition until medical help arrives.
3. Promote Recovery – Encourage healing and comfort by providing reassurance,
proper positioning, and appropriate care.
Additional objectives include:
Relieve pain and anxiety.
Provide quick and effective intervention in emergencies.
Ensure safe transfer of the victim to medical facilities.
Roles and Responsibilities of a First Aider
A trained first aider has an important role in emergencies. Their responsibilities
include:
1. Assessing the Situation – Stay calm, ensure safety for self, casualty, and bystanders,
and quickly evaluate what happened.
2. Protecting Life – Apply basic life-saving skills such as CPR, bleeding control, and
airway management.
3. Providing Immediate Care – Offer the correct first aid treatment based on the
casualty’s condition.
4. Preventing Further Injury – Move the casualty only if necessary, keep them warm,
and prevent shock.
5. Calling for Help – Contact emergency services promptly and give clear, accurate
information.
6. Reassuring the Casualty – Provide comfort, reduce fear, and maintain calmness.
7. Monitoring the Casualty – Continuously observe their breathing, pulse, and level of
response until professional help arrives.
8. Maintaining Confidentiality – Respect the privacy and dignity of the casualty.
Characteristics of a Good First Aider
A good first aider should possess both knowledge and personal qualities, such as:
1. Calm and Composed – Able to stay collected under pressure.
2. Observant – Quick to notice symptoms, injuries, and changes in the casualty’s
condition.
3. Decisive – Can make sound decisions promptly.
