Chapter 6: Life Processes
Life processes – Basic functions in living organisms
like nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion.
Nutrition – The process of taking in food and utilizing
it for growth and energy.
Autotrophic nutrition – Nutrition where organisms
make their own food, like green plants.
Heterotrophic nutrition – Nutrition where organisms
depend on others for food.
Photosynthesis – The process by which plants make
food using sunlight, CO₂, and water.
Chlorophyll – Green pigment in leaves needed for
photosynthesis.
Stomata – Tiny openings on leaves for gas exchange.
Ingestion – Taking food into the body.
Digestion – Breaking down complex food into simple
substances.
Absorption – Uptake of digested food into the blood.
Assimilation – Using absorbed nutrients for energy and
growth.
Egestion – Removing undigested waste from the body.
Peristalsis – Wave-like muscular movements that push
food through the digestive tract.
Amylase – Enzyme in saliva that breaks starch into
sugar.
Villi – Finger-like structures in the intestine that absorb
nutrients.
Respiration – Process of releasing energy from food.
Aerobic respiration – Respiration in the presence of
oxygen.
Anaerobic respiration – Respiration without oxygen.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) – Energy currency of
the cell.
Lungs – Organs for gas exchange in humans.
Trachea – Windpipe that carries air to lungs.
Alveoli – Air sacs in lungs where oxygen and carbon
dioxide are exchanged.
Transportation – Movement of materials like food,
water, and gases inside the body.
Xylem – Plant tissue that transports water and minerals.
Phloem – Plant tissue that transports food (glucose).
Heart – Muscular organ that pumps blood.
Arteries – Blood vessels that carry blood away from
the heart.
Veins – Blood vessels that carry blood back to the
heart.
Capillaries – Tiny vessels where exchange of
substances happens.
Blood – Fluid that transports oxygen, nutrients, and
waste.
Excretion – Removal of metabolic waste from the
body.
Kidney – Organ that filters blood and forms urine.
Nephron – Structural and functional unit of the kidney.
Ureter – Tube that carries urine from kidney to bladder.
Urinary bladder – Organ that stores urine.
Urethra – Tube that releases urine from the body.
