Question 2) Define the following:

1. Light – Light is a form of energy. When light falls on an object it

becomes visible to us.
2. Luminous objects – objects that produce their own light.

3. Non- Luminous objects – objects that do not produce their

own light.

[Link] – the process of light bouncing off an object after

hitting it.

5. Refraction – the bending of light happens when it passes

through two different mediums.

6. Shadow – the dark patch formed on a surface when light hits an

opaque object.

7. Transparent object – When light completely passes through

an object for e.g. clear glass.

8. Translucent object – When only a part of light passes

through an object is is called translucent object. For e.g. Sunglasses

9. Opaque object - some objects totally block the light from

passing through them. For e.g. Brickwall.

Question 3) Name the following:

a) A form of energy that helps us to see things around us. - LIGHT
b) The process of light bouncing off an object after hitting a surface.-
REFLECTION
c). use of sun’s energy to produce electricity. – SOLAR ENERGY
d. Objects that can give their own light are called as. - Luminous
e. Objects that do not have their own light, they emit the light of others. Non-
Luminous
f. When light bends at the point where two surfaces meet it is called as -
Refraction
g. Objects that allow light to completely pass are - Transparent
h. Objects that allow only a part of light to pass are - Translucent
I. Objects that do not allow any light to pass are called - Opaque
j. The seven colours split when light passes through a - prism.
l. A type of pollution caused by using too much artificial lighting at night- Light
Pollution

Question 4) Give reason for the following:

a) Lampshades are usually made of translucent materials.
Ans: To reduce the brightness of the light passing through it.

b) Translucent objects form faint shadows.

Ans: Yes, as they allow some light to pass from them so only a faint
shadow remains.

c) Shadows are shortest at noon.

Ans: Yes, as the sun is at the highest point in the sky and directly above
our head.

d) An arrow changes direction when viewed through a glass full

of water.
Ans: Yes, this is due to refraction, the shadow of the arrow bends at the
point of meeting.

Question 5) Correct the following sentences:

1. Light can go around the Earth 6 times in 1 second.
Ans: Light can go around 7 times in 1 second

2. Light from sun tales 7 minutes and 20 seconds to reach the

earth.
Ans: Light from sun tales 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach the earth.

3. When light falls on a transparent object, it bounces back.

Ans: When light falls on an opaque object, it bounces back.

4. Fire is a man-made source of light

Ans: Fire is a natural source of light

5. A transparent object forms a clear, dark shadow

Ans: A transparent object does not form a shadow

6. Your shadow is the longest in the noon

Ans: Your shadow is the shortest in the noon

7. The moon emits its own light

Ans: The moon emits the light of the sun.

8. Light travels in a curved line

Ans: light travels in a straight line.

9. Light does not spread in all directions from its source

Ans: Light spreads in all directions from its source
10. When the light bends upon meeting a surface, it is called
reflection
Ans: When the light bends upon meeting a surface it is called refraction

11. White light is made of 5 colours which are seen when

passing through a prism.
Ans: White light is made of 7 colours which are seen when passing through a
prism

12. We wear transparent clothes

Ans: We wear opaque clothes

13. We use opaque plastic to wrap products in a shop for

display
Ans: We use transparent plastic to wrap products in a shop for display

Question 6) Answer the following

questions:
Q1. A mirror appears to shine when bright light from a torch
falls on it. Is the mirror a luminous object? Give reason for your
answer.
Ans: No mirror is not a luminous object. Mirror does not produce own
light it simply reflects the light of another luminous object like light

Q2. The teacher darkened the classroom and lit a candle. She
placed a book between the candle and the wall. The students
noticed that a dark patch formed on the wall.
i) Why did a dark patch form on the wall?
Ans: Because book is an opaque object, it will form a shadow.

ii) What is the dark patch called?

Ans: it is called a shadow.

iii) What type of object is the book?

Ans: It is an opaque object.

iv) What happens if the teacher uses a sheet of glass instead of the book?
Ans: The light will pass through and not reflect as glass is a transparent object.
Q3. Why can’t we see objects in the dark?
Ans: because human can see only those objects which reflect light. When it is
dark no light gets reflected.

Q4. State two difference between luminous objects and non-luminous

objects with an example.
LUMINOUS NON-LUMINOUS
1. They produce their own light. For They reflect the light of a luminous
e.g. Sun emits own light. object. For e.g Moon reflects the light
of sun
2. Luminous objects are visible on Non luminous objects are only
their own. visible when light falls on them.

Q5. State three properties of light.

1. Light travels in a straight line.
2. Light spreads in all directions from its source.
3. Light gets both reflected and refracted.

Q6. After sunset we need to switch on the lights in our home to

see clearly. why?
Ans: This happens because the sun is the largest natural source of light.
Hence once the Sun sets, we need artificial sources like tube light, CFL
bulbs to illuminate the areas around us.

Q7. What do you understand by reflection of Light?

Ans: the process of light bouncing off an object after hitting i.e. Mirror
reflects light.

Q8. A spoon appears bent when immersed in a glass of water.

Give Reason
Ans: The spoon appears bent due to the refraction of light. The bending
of light happens when it passes through two different mediums.

Q. Classify the following objects as Transparent, Translucent and

Opaque.
OBJECT TYPE JUSTIFICATION
Butter Paper Translucent As It allows only a part of light to
pass through it.
Clear Glass Transparent As It allows entire light to pass
through it.
Brick wall Opaque As it does not allow any light to
pass through it , completely blocks
light.

Q. Explain with the help of a diagram how shadows are formed?

Ans: Shadows are formed when an opaque object like human body
blocks the path of the light falling on them.
Q. Ravi Saw that in the morning and in the evening his shadow
appears to be longer than during afternoon. What could be the
possible explanation for the same?
Ans: During the morning and evening the shadow is the longest as the
sun’s hits us at a slanted angle, xdbut in the afternoon the sun is above
our head and so the shadow is the shortest.

Question 7) Draw and label

The length of the shadow in different part of the day
