Some people believed that schoolchildren should not be given homework by
their teachers, whereas others argue that homework plays an important role
in the education of children.
Discuss both views and give your opinion
People hold different views about whether homework should be compulsorily
assigned by teachers. There are many individuals who think that homework is
crucial to children’s education; however, I am of the opinion that teachers should
not give homework to schoolchildren.
On the one hand, it is believed that homework plays an essential role in the
education of students. The main reason is that homework could effectively
consolidate the understanding of the knowledge that children have learned at
school. For example, formulas of mathematics or other science subjects, which
some children find difficult and complicated to remember, practicing similar tasks
at home can help them remember easily. Therefore, students are likely to practice
more and ingrain the knowledge in their minds for a longer time and hence they do
not have to revise such a tremendous amount of knowledge when preparing for the
exams. Gradually, this can have beneficial influences on their academic results.
On the other hand, I firmly hold the view that students should not be forced to do
homework. The first reason is that students are seemed to be under pressure from
school because of an enormous amount of study and if they have to spend the rest
of their time at home completing assignments, they could be stressed and
depressed. Additionally, an overloaded brain could act as a deterrent to the ability
to absorb more knowledge productively the next day, leading to poorer academic
performance at school. In addition, time spent on homework encroach upon that
for relaxing and physical activities, contributing to students’ sedentary lifestyles,
which can do harm to their mental and physical health
In conclusion, while acknowledging the validity of the important role of
homework, I would argue that homework is an unnecessary method for students to
have a better education.
