WHY THE PROJECT?
• This Training/Project Is Intended To Achieve The Following Objectives;
1. To Provide ICT Knowledge and Skills to Teachers Through Theory and Practical Training in Order to
Close the Skills Gap, and Further Enhances One’s Career.
2. To Expose Participants to the Modern Era of Information Technology, also Known as the “Information
Age”, through internet knowledge.
3. To Inspire Adoption of Modern Teaching Techniques through networking, information sharing with
colleagues in other areas, for Improved Learning for the Learners.
4. To Encourage Research Among Participants Through the Internet, Thereby Enabling Access to Up-to-
date Information and Data Relevant to the Topics and Subjects Taught in Class.
5. To Make Teachers Relevant to Society, Especially in this Information Age, Where Almost Everything is
Done by the Click of a Button.
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
Teachers Will Have New Skills That Shall Enable Them Navigate The World Through The Internet
For New Ideas And Better Teaching Methods.
With The New Skills, Teachers Will Be Able To Save, Share And Transfer Data/Information Safely
Using The Computer And Internet.
There Will Be A Better Understanding Of ICT And The Opportunities Available For Schools Such
As Creating Partnerships With Other Schools Within And Abroad.
Improvement In Grades For The Students As A Result Of Well Informed Teachers Who Are Able To
Research And Give Their Students The Best.
There Will Be Possible Improvement Of Income As The Beneficiaries Make Use Of Their Acquired
Skills To Get Employment And Also Start Up Businesses.

BASIC COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE
• What is a computer? A computer has many definitions to it, but it is simply a
digital electronic device that receives input, processes it, saves/stores and
provides output according to instructions.
- Input refers to raw data that is put in the computer through typing, writing,
drawing or voice.
- Processing refers to the act of interpretation of the input by the computer into a
form easily understood by the end user.
- Output is the end product displayed on the screen or heard on the speaker or
printed out on paper.
ORIGIN OF THE COMPUTER
• The first mechanical computer was developed by Charles Babbage, an English
Mechanical Engineer who assembled a machine that could input numbers, had a
memory and processor and a way of producing output. This was in the early 19th
Century.
• However, the history of computer begins with the birth of abacus which is believed
to be the first computer. It is said that Chinese invented abacus around 4,000
years ago. It was a wooden rack which has metal rods with beads mounted on
them.

TYPES OF COMPUTERS
• COMPUTERS ARE OF THREE (3) MAIN TYPES, NAMELY;
• MAIN FRAME COMPUTERS – These are very large computers usually occupying spacious rooms,
and they are used by large organizations and companies to store large quantities of data.
• DESKTOP COMPUTERS – These are the commonly used computers in offices and homes, having a
monitor, CPU, keyboard and a mouse (full set). They perform basic computer functions.
• LAPTOPS – These are mobile computers that are relatively smaller and light in weight, easily
moved from one place to another.
• Desktops and laptops are now commonly termed as PERSONAL COMPUTERS (PC).

• A COMPUTER HAS 4 MAIN PARTS, NAMELY;
Monitor/Screen Central Processing Unit (CPU) Keyboard Mouse/Touchpad/Joystick
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
• A COMPUTER HAS TWO (2) COMPONENTS THAT MAKE IT WHAT IT IS.
- HARDWARE: This refers to the physical parts of the computer that can seen and touched, for
example;
- Monitor
- Mouse
- Hard Disk Drive
- Keyboard
- And many others

- SOFTWARE: Sometimes called a “software program”, it refers to a set of instructions designed to
enable the hardware perform tasks i.e. it tells the computer what to do. Software are designed by
professionals known as software developers/engineers using programming languages.
Software are divided into 2 i.e. application software & operating system.
Application software is software designed to perform specific tasks e.g. accounting software,
online registration software, music/video players, antivirus software etc.
Operating system (OS) is software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and
provides common services for computer programs. It is software that comes with the computer and
is designed by the computer manufacturer to run the computer e.g. Windows, Linux, Ubuntu etc.

STARTING/TURNING ON THE COMPUTER
• •Press the power button, one that looks the symbol shown on the
CPU.
• •A desktop may also have a power button on the monitor.
• •Wait until you see the Log In Screen (if it is a personalized pc).
• •There should be a picture with a name under it.
• •Click the picture.
• If it requires a password, then you will type the account password to allow you access the
computer.
• After that, you will wait for the “Desktop/Home Screen” to display.
NOTE: The Desktop/Home Screen is the screen that appears with small pictures called icons.

THE MOUSE
NOTE: An icon is a pictogram or ideogram displayed on a computer screen in order to help the user
navigate a computer system.
Using the Mouse
• LEFT BUTTON: Click to start programs or select options.
• RIGHT BUTTON: Open up a menu of different things you can do, this becomes more
important as you become more comfortable.
• MIDDLE BUTTON: Scroll up and down a document/page.
BASIC MOVEMENT OF THE MOUSE
• •Move the mouse to move the Cursor on the monitor.
• •Right: Right
• •Left: Left
• •Forward: Up
• •Backward: Down
NB: The curser appears on the screen as one
of these shown right.
THE START MENU
• •START MENU: An application that can be used to start other programs, usually at the
bottom left hand corner of the Home Screen.
• •CLICK: Usually means “press the left mouse button” (unless stated otherwise).
• •To find programs that might not be represented by icons on the Home Screen/Desktop,
click the windows button/start menu at the bottom left corner of the monitor to open
the Start Menu.
• You will see a pop up list of programs in alphabetical order, then click on any program of
choice to open it.
• TASK BAR: A bar at the bottom of the screen used for controlling programs when opened.
• To restore (un-minimize) a program, click the program’s icon on the task bar at the bottom
of your screen.
A WINDOW
• Window refers to the screen that appears once a program, folder or file has been opened.
• On the top right hand corner are 3
features used for Minimizing,
Maximizing, and Exiting/Ending programs
as seen in the image respectively.
- Minimize reduces the size or takes off the
the window from the screen.
- Maximize makes the program window
take up the entire screen.
- Exit stops/ends the program.
TASK BAR
• The task bar is the part of the screen at the bottom, marked red, in the image below (yours may
be a different color).
THE KEYBOARD
• The keyboard is the basic tool for input, it is made up of keys/buttons that
perform specific functions on the computer.
• Special Keys
- Enter: Sometimes named “Return”, this key performs functions such as starting a new
line when typing, an alternative to click, and confirmation key.
- Backspace: Delete/remove a character backwards.
- Delete: Remove/delete a character frontwards.
- Shift: Type letters in upper case when kept down while typing, and other functions.
- Caps Lock: Change from upper case letters to lower case or vice-versa.
FILES AND FOLDERS
• A file is a collection of data stored in a computer, while a collection of files stored
together is known as a folder.
• Files are of two types i.e.
- Text files e.g. a document
- And application/program files such as software.
