Science Chapter Notes

The document contains exam notes on motion, force, and laws, including definitions of displacement and inertia. It outlines differences between mass and weight, Newton's 3rd Law, and the concept of work, along with a case study involving a stone thrown upward. Additionally, it presents the first equation of motion with a velocity-time graph explanation.

Science – Motion, Force & Laws (Exam Notes)

B. Short Answer (2 × 2 = 4 marks)

4. Define displacement.
Displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final positions of a body in a specific
direction.

5. What is inertia?
Inertia is the tendency of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or of uniform motion.

C. Long Answer (3 × 3 = 9 marks)

6. Differences between Mass & Weight

Mass Weight

Amount of matter in a body Force with which Earth attracts the body

Constant everywhere Changes with gravitational acceleration

SI unit: kg SI unit: Newton (N)

Scalar quantity Vector quantity

7. Newton’s 3rd Law

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Examples: - Gun recoil - Walking on ground

8. Work Work is done when a force produces displacement in its direction.

Formula: W = F × s

Work is zero when: - Displacement = 0 - Force is perpendicular to displacement

D. Case Study (4 × 1 = 4 marks)

A stone is thrown upward with 10 m/s.

Question Answer

9. Acceleration upward –9.8 m/s²

10. Velocity at top 0 m/s

1
Question Answer

11. Force acting Gravitational force

12. Type of motion Non-uniform

E. Detailed Answer (1 × 5 = 5 marks)

13. First equation of motion (v = u + at)

From the velocity–time graph:

a = (v – u) / t ⇒ v = u + at

(Include neat labelled graph in exam)
