Class 7 Mathematics – Chapter: SET (Complete
Notes)
1. Definition of Set
A set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects. Each object of a set is called an element or
member.
2. How to Know Whether a Collection is a Set
A collection is called a set if it is well-defined, elements are not repeated, and there is no confusion
about membership.
3. Representation of a Set
(a) Roster (Tabular) Form: Listing all elements.
Example: A = {1, 3, 5, 7}
(b) Set-Builder (Rule) Form: Using a rule or condition.
Example: A = {x | x is an odd natural number less than 10}
4. Types of Sets (with Examples)
1 Empty (Null) Set: A set with no elements. Example: Set of months with 32 days = ∅
2 Singleton Set: A set having only one element. Example: A = {0}
3 Finite Set: A set with limited number of elements. Example: B = {2, 4, 6, 8}
4 Infinite Set: A set with unlimited elements. Example: Set of natural numbers N = {1, 2, 3, ...}
5 Equal Sets: Sets having exactly same elements. Example: A = {1, 2, 3}, B = {3, 2, 1}
6 Subset: All elements of one set are contained in another set. Example: A = {1, 2}, B = {1, 2, 3}
7 Universal Set: A set containing all elements under discussion. Example: U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
5. Symbols Used in Set
1 ∈ : belongs to
2 ∉ : does not belong to
3 ⊆ : subset of
4 ∅ : empty set
6. Solved Example
Represent the set of multiples of 3 less than 15 in roster and set-builder form.
Roster Form: {3, 6, 9, 12}
Set-Builder Form: {x | x is a multiple of 3 and x < 15}
7. Practice Questions
1 1. Write the set of first five natural numbers in roster form.
2 2. Write the set of even numbers less than 20 in set-builder form.
3 3. Write two examples each of finite and infinite sets.
4 4. If A = {2, 4, 6} and B = {2, 4, 6, 8}, check whether A ⊆ B.
5 5. Write the universal set for the set of vowels in English alphabet.
8. "Is it a Set or Not?" (Exam Type Questions)
1 1. Collection of prime numbers less than 10.
2 2. Collection of beautiful flowers.
3 3. Collection of students in Class 7 Section A.
4 4. Collection of good teachers.
