Why Study Rizal?

Studying the life and works of Dr. José Rizal is an important part of understanding

Philippine history, identity, and nationhood. Rizal is not only a national hero but

also a symbol of peaceful resistance, intellectual courage, and deep love for the

country. Through his writings, ideas, and sacrifices, he helped awaken the

consciousness of Filipinos during the Spanish colonial period and inspired the

movement toward freedom.

One of the main reasons for studying Rizal is to understand the social conditions of

the Philippines under Spanish rule. His novels Noli Me Tangere and El

Filibusterismo realistically portrayed the abuses of the friars, corruption in the

government, and the suffering of ordinary Filipinos. These works opened the eyes

of the people to the injustices they were experiencing and encouraged them to

think critically about their situation. By studying Rizal, students gain a clearer

picture of the struggles faced by Filipinos in the past and how these struggles

shaped the nation.

Another reason to study Rizal is to learn the values he stood for. Rizal believed in

education as the key to progress, freedom of thought, and peaceful reform rather

than violent revolution. He showed that change can begin through knowledge,

discipline, and moral integrity. His life reminds Filipinos that loving one’s country

does not always require taking up arms; it can also be expressed through service,

honesty, and the courage to speak the truth.

Studying Rizal also helps develop a sense of nationalism and pride in being

Filipino. By learning about his achievements and sacrifices, students are reminded

that freedom was not easily gained and that many heroes risked their lives for the
country. This awareness encourages responsibility and active participation in

nation-building. Rizal’s example challenges Filipinos today to contribute positively

to society and to stand against injustice in any form.

In conclusion, we study Rizal not only to fulfill an academic requirement but to

understand our history, strengthen our national identity, and apply his ideals in

modern society. His life and works continue to be relevant as they guide Filipinos

toward becoming informed, responsible, and patriotic citizens.
