Chapter III

This chapter outlines the research methodology for a study on the impact of athletic activities on the academic performance of Senior High School STEM student-athletes at Himamaylan National High School. It details the non-experimental post-test only design, purposive sampling of 30 respondents, and the use of a survey instrument for data collection. The chapter also discusses the validation and reliability of the instrument, data gathering procedures, and statistical treatment of the data using SPSS and Pearson correlation methods.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will focus on the discussion of research design,

research environment, selection and description of respondents,

description of instruments, validity and reliability of the instrument and

statistical treatment of data to be employed in this investigation.

On the other hand, it will also discuss on the techniques chosen

for gathering the data, the criteria that will be used in selecting the

participants and how the data will be treated and analyzed.

Research Design

The study will utilize a non- experimental method and the post-

test only design will be used in this study. A post-test only design is

simple and straightforward. This type of design can be done with one

group (no comparison group) or two groups (with a comparison group)

of participants. Participants receive an intervention and will be tested

afterwards. The subjects to be selected are the Senior High School

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics student athletes

associated in Himamaylan National High School.

The students will be given a survey to determine the intervention

of engaging in athletic activities and to determine their coping

strategies to their academic performances.

Participant of the Study

The respondents of the study will be selected among the Senior

High School Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics

students engaging in athletic activities. The researchers will be

selecting 30 respondents to be utilized in conducting the study.

Sampling Design

The study employs purposive sampling in identifying the

participants. This is a non-random technique which utilizes individuals

who have experienced the phenomenon being explored and can be

articulated their conscious experiences about the phenomenon.

More specifically, the study uses criterion something wherein

only the participants who will meet the criteria set by the researcher

will be involved in the study. The criteria that will be used are the

following: 1. The participants are the Senior High School Science

Technology Engineering and Mathematics students of Himamaylan

National High School at Himamaylan City. 2. They are involved in

athletics activities.
Research Instrument

The investigation to be used by the researchers is the posttest

only design. The survey will consist of varied questions to determine a

student’s response towards coping strategies in athletic activities to

their academic performance. The researchers are guided with a

questionnaire to gather information from the respondents.

Validity and Reliability

The research instrument will go through validation to ensure that

the contents are aligned with the objectives and have a necessary

depth to gather extensive data. When validating instrument, the

researchers will probe the subject teacher to assess the strength of the

questionnaire using the Good and Scates Validity Test.

The reliability of the questionnaire will be tested by authorizing

the chosen thirty (30) students to answer the survey questionnaire.

These students are not the real participants. The instrument will be

determined reliable using Cronbach alpha procuring the score of 0.90

indicating internal consistency of the instrument.

The recommendations of the validations and the advices of the

experts will be considered and incorporated in the revision of the final

instruments.
Data Gathering Procedure

Firstly, the researchers will collaborate to formulate questions to

seek credible answers. Each member must show cooperation thus

leading to completion of the questionnaires. The researchers will send

a letter to the principal’s office to request permission to allow the

researchers to select varied respondents from the Science Technology

Engineering and Mathematics Senior High School students.

The researchers will finalize the questionnaire and proceed to

data gathering. The researchers will gather students that are involved

in athletics activities as the study will seek their coping strategies to

their academic performance.

Simultaneously, the researchers will provide a survey for each

respondent. As the survey finishes, the researchers will determine the

coping strategies of student- athletes on their academic performance

from the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Senior High

School.
Statistical Treatment of Data

The main intention of this study is to determine if a difference

exists between the level of academic performance and the extent of

performance of student- athlete participated in athletic activities. A

student that will participate will be defined as having been involved in

an athletic activity that meet at least twice a week for a minimum of

two months. The student must have participated during a minimum of

three years at Himamaylan National High School.

The independent variable is participation in athletic activities.

The dependent is the level of academic performance.

The statistical analysis and data management system (SPSS) will

be used to analyze the data.

A pearson correlation method will be used to test the null

hypothesis of the study.
