Unlike Bezier basis function Bi,n(u), the degree of the B-Spline basis function Ni,k(u)
is NOT dependent on the number of control points n; instead, it is controlled by another
integer k independent of n.

Introduction
Motivation
Bezier representation is good, but has these drawbacks:
1. High degree
The degree is determined by the number of control points which
tends to be large for complex curves. This causes oscillation and other
computational
i l problems.

2. Global p propagation

When modifying a control point, the designer wants to see the shape
change locally around the moved control point. In Bezier case, the change

To satisfy requirements, Cox[1972] and de Boor [1972] suggested
the blending functions Ni,k (u) defined by recursive formulas in
Equations (6.32) and (6.33).

We now need to determine (n+k+1) knot values from t0 to tn+k.
There are basically two types of knots: periodic and
nonperiodic knots.
Periodic knots are determined from
ti = i –k (0 ≤ i ≤ n+k) (6.34)
ti are the knot values, or the parameters values limiting the finite
intervals over which the blendingg functions have nonzero values.
The gap between neighboring knots is always uniform, with a value of 1.
B-spline curve based on uniform knots is called a uniform B-spline curve.
A uniform B-spline curve can be either periodic or nonperiodic.
