Step 1: Introduction to Narrative Essays

1. Explain the Purpose: Narratives tell a story. They have a clear beginning, middle,
and end and often include personal experiences or fictional events.
2. Components of a Narrative: Introduce the key elements:
o Characters: Who is in the story?
o Setting: Where and when does the story take place?
o Plot: What happens in the story?
o Conflict: What challenge or problem do the characters face?
o Resolution: How is the conflict resolved?

Step 2: Planning the Essay

1. Outline: Teach students how to create a basic outline:


o Introduction: Introduce the characters and setting.
o Rising Action: Describe the events leading up to the main event.
o Climax: The most exciting part of the story.
o Falling Action: Events that happen after the climax.
o Conclusion: How the story ends and the resolution of the conflict. Lesson and
hope need to be included.
