Basic Math Reviewer

This reviewer covers essential topics in basic mathematics, including operations, fractions,

1. Basic Operations
• Addition – Combining two or more numbers to get a total.
Example: 25 + 15 = 40

• Subtraction – Finding the difference between numbers.


Example: 50 - 20 = 30

• Multiplication – Repeated addition.


Example: 6 × 4 = 24

• Division – Splitting into equal parts.


Example: 20 ÷ 5 = 4

2. Fractions and Decimals


• Proper Fraction – numerator < denominator (e.g., 3/4)
• Improper Fraction – numerator > denominator (e.g., 5/2)
• Mixed Number – whole number and a fraction (e.g., 2 1/3)
• Converting Fractions to Decimals: divide numerator by denominator.
Example: 1/4 = 0.25

3. Percentages
• Percent means 'per hundred'.
Example: 25% = 25/100 = 0.25

• Finding the percentage of a number:


Example: 20% of 150 = 0.20 × 150 = 30

• Finding the base:

Examples:
Rectangle → l × w
Triangle → ½ × b × h

• Volume – space occupied by a solid object.
Example: Cube → s³, Rectangular Prism → l × w × h

5. Algebra
• Variable – a symbol that represents an unknown value (e.g., x, y).

• Simplifying Expressions – combine like terms.


Example: 2x + 3x = 5x

• Solving Equations – find the value of the variable.


Example: 2x + 5 = 15 → 2x = 10 → x = 5
