Statement on the Use of Generative AI:

We recognize that English is a second or even third language for many of our international applicants. Tools
such as generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) may be helpful for refining grammar and organization. However, your
essay must ultimately reflect your own experiences, perspectives, and writing style.

There is nothing wrong with using generative AI as a supportive tool. The problem is that it is very difficult for
readers to know how much an AI model has been used in the writing process. Our Selection Committee
reviews hundreds of essays and can often detect writing that appears to rely too heavily on AI. To ensure
fairness, the committee will disqualify any application that they reasonably suspect to be the product of
improper AI use.

Please also keep in mind that overreliance on AI will disadvantage you. The strongest essays are always
personal, relatable, and unique in voice. A few spelling or grammar mistakes are far less harmful than
submitting an essay that feels generic or impersonal.

Proper use of AI includes:

● Brainstorming or structuring your essay before you write.

● Finding alternative ways to phrase a sentence.

● Receiving feedback on an essay you have written.

Improper use of AI includes:

● Having an AI write or rewrite your essay from start to finish.

● Submitting an essay where the main ideas or the majority of the wording come from an AI.

● Even using AI solely to polish or rewrite the full essay can cross into improper use.

Use AI as a tool to support your authentic voice, not to replace it. The committee will always value
authenticity over polish.
