Chapter 6: DETERMINERS

Definition: Determiners are words that introduce a noun and modify it by telling us
something important about it.

Articles, possessive adjectives, numeral adjectives, quantifiers, demonstrative adjectives,


distributive adjectives, interrogative adjectives are some commonly used determiners.

Some words can either be used as pronouns or determiners. If a word is used with a noun it is
a determiner. If it is used to replace the noun, it is a pronoun.

Eg: That movie was excellent. (That- determiner)

That was an excellent movie. (That- pronoun)

Study this list of some commonly used determiners.

a. Articles: a, an, the

b. Possessive adjectives: my, our, your, his, its, their, her

c. Numeral adjectives: two, twenty, first, seventh

d. Quantifiers: much, many, some, any, few, little, enough

e. Demonstrative adjectives: this, that, these, those

f. Distributive adjectives: each, every, either, neither

g. Interrogative adjectives: what, which, whose

Important Points:

• Personal pronouns and possessive pronouns can never be determiners, because they
are always used in place of a noun.
• We can't use 'a / an' with an uncountable noun.
• We can't use 'much' with a plural noun.
• Determiners can only be placed before nouns.
