Class7 Light Notes

The chapter discusses the properties of light, including its straight-line travel, reflection, and refraction. It explains different types of mirrors (plane, concave, and convex) and their characteristics and uses, as well as the function of lenses and the phenomenon of light dispersion. Additionally, it addresses eye defects such as far sightedness and their correction using convex lenses.

Chapter – Light (Class 7)

Properties of Light
1. Light travels in a straight line (rectilinear propagation).
2. Light can be reflected.
3. Light can be refracted.

Reflection of Light
Reflection is when light bounces back after striking a shiny polished surface.

Regular Reflection: Happens on smooth shiny surfaces.

Irregular Reflection: Happens on rough surfaces.

Plane Mirror
Image is virtual, upright and same size.

Uses of Plane Mirrors

• Periscopes
• Looking mirrors
• To check teeth by a dentist

Concave Mirror
A mirror curved inward like a spoon.
Characteristics:
• Can form real or virtual image.
• Image may be inverted or enlarged depending on object position.

Uses of Concave Mirror

• Shaving mirror
• Headlights
• Solar cooker

Convex Mirror
A mirror curved outward (back of spoon).
Image is always virtual, upright and diminished.

Uses of Convex Mirror

• Rear view mirrors in vehicles
• Security mirrors in shops
• Mirrors at sharp turns

Lenses
Convex Lens
Thick in middle and thin at edges.
Converges light rays to a point (focus).

Nature of image: real and inverted (sometimes virtual).

Size of image: usually diminished.

Uses of Lenses
• Magnifying glass
• Binoculars
• Cameras
Dispersion of Light
Dispersion is splitting of white light into seven colours (VIBGYOR) when it passes through a prism.

Eye Defects
Far sightedness is corrected by convex lens.
