A self-inverse transformation is one that when applied twice results in the identity transformation, effectively bringing the object back to its original position. Geometrically on a plane, this can appear as a reflection, where reflecting twice over the same line returns the object to its initial position. Another example is a 180-degree rotation about a point, as performing two such rotations brings points back to their starting location .
An anti-clockwise rotation by 180 degrees around the origin flips each point to its diametrically opposite position, effectively mirroring the shape about both the x and y axes. Following this with a translation of 1 unit in the positive x-direction and 2 units in the negative y-direction shifts the entire transformed shape to add these vector movements to each point. This results in the shape appearing as if it was first mirrored and then moved right and down relative to its new orientation .
In the trigonometric function y = A * cos(Bx + C) + D, the mean line of the graph is represented by D, which is the vertical shift from the origin, effectively moving the horizontal middle of the oscillation up or down. The amplitude, represented by A, is the vertical stretch factor that defines the distance from the mean line to the peak or trough of the cosine wave. Changes to D affect only the position of the mean line, while changes to A affect only the height of the wave .
Vertical dilation by a factor of 2 multiplies all y-values of the graph by 2, so the amplitude of the sine function increases from 1 to 2. The graph still oscillates between -2 and 2 instead of -1 and 1. However, the period and phase shift of the graph remain unchanged, and the graph continues to have the same x-intercepts .
The order of transformations is crucial because geometric operations are not necessarily commutative, meaning performing transformations in different sequences can yield different results. For instance, a rotation followed by a translation typically places the object at a different position compared to performing the translation first and then rotating. The first operation sets the coordinate frame for subsequent transformations, affecting how and where the next operations will occur .
Combining a reflection about the y-axis with horizontal dilation results in the original figure being mirrored over the y-axis, flipping the sign of the x-coordinates. Then, horizontal dilation by a factor greater than 1 would stretch the figure away from the y-axis, while a factor less than 1 would compress it towards the y-axis. These combined transformations result in the figure being flipped and resized horizontally .
A horizontal dilation factor affects the period of the sine function y = sin(Bx). The period of y = sin(Bx) is 2π/B. Thus, a horizontal dilation increases or decreases the period of the function by altering B. For example, if the factor is 2, meaning B = 1/2, the period would double, changing from 2π to 4π, stretching the wave horizontally .
A transformation matrix is singular if its determinant is zero, which means it doesn't have an inverse. This affects its invertibility because an inverse matrix provides the means to reverse a transformation. If a transformation matrix is singular, it maps a higher-dimensional space into a lower dimension, causing a loss of information. Thus, reverse transformations are not possible if the matrix is singular .
A reflection about the y-axis followed by a reflection about the line y = x results in a transformation equivalent to a 90-degree counter-clockwise rotation about the origin. This is due to the composite effect of first mirroring the coordinates over the y-axis, which flips the sign of the x-coordinates, and then reflecting these across the line y = x, which swaps the x and y coordinates. Thus, the transformations effectively rotate the shape 90 degrees counter-clockwise .
The matrix (-1 0\ 0 -1) represents a rotation by 180 degrees about the origin. It simultaneously negates the x and y coordinates of each point, effectively flipping them to their opposites. This results in a point reflection, meaning the object appears upside down and mirrored over both axes, equivalent to a half-turn .
