INTRODUCTION TO WEB TECHNOLOGIES

Web technologies are tools and techniques used to communicate, access, and share
information on the internet. They include websites, browsers, search engines, blogs, and
more.

IMPORTANCE OF THE WEB IN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

1. Provides access to a vast amount of information.
2. Enhances research and learning.
3. Encourages collaboration and communication.
4. Supports distance and self-paced learning.
5. Gives access to educational videos and tutorials.

USE OF OPEN LEARNING WEBSITES IN THE CLASSROOM

These platforms provide free learning resources, video lectures, and interactive exercises.

Examples: Khan Academy, Coursera, edX, YouTube EDU.

TECHNIQUES FOR EVALUATING WEB PAGES

Accuracy: Check the correctness of information.
Content: Ensure it is relevant and useful.
Currency: Verify if the page is up to date.
Functionality: Make sure all links and features work properly.

HOW TO USE A WEB BROWSER

1. Open a browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.).
2. Type the web address or search term.
3. Click to navigate and interact with content.
4. Use tabs and bookmarks.

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY SEARCH FROM A WEB BROWSER

Searching effectively from a web browser means finding the exact information you need
quickly and accurately. Here are some simple steps and techniques:

1. Use Specific Keywords

Instead of typing a full sentence, use important words that relate directly to what you're
looking for.
Example:
❌ "What is the meaning of global warming?"
✅ "global warming definition"
2. Use Search Operators
These help you control the search results:
 AND – Finds pages that include both terms.
Example: "climate AND change"
 OR – Finds pages that include either term.
Example: "solar OR wind energy"
 NOT – Excludes results with a term.
Example: "python NOT snake"

3. Use Quotation Marks for Phrases

When you want results for an exact phrase, put it in quotation marks.
Example:
"renewable energy sources"

4. Check the First Few Results

Look at the titles and brief descriptions on the first page. Click the most relevant and
trustworthy source (like .edu, .org, or known sites).

5. Use Search Suggestions

When you type something, most search engines give auto-suggestions. These help refine
or guide your search.

SEARCH ENGINE COMPONENTS

1. Crawler – The Web Explorer

 A crawler is a special computer program that goes around the internet looking
at websites.

 It gathers information from web pages just like a student taking notes in a
library.

 Crawlers visit websites 24/7 and bring back new or updated content.

2. Index – The Big Library Shelf

 The index is where the search engine stores all the information collected by the
crawler.
 It's like a giant digital library that saves what each website is about.

 When you search, the engine doesn’t check the whole internet – it checks the
index first!

Imagine it like a huge bookshelf that holds summaries of all websites.

3. Algorithm – The Sorting Brain

 An algorithm is a smart program that organizes and ranks the results.

 It decides which websites appear first, based on how useful or relevant they are
to your search.

 It uses many rules, like how often a word appears, how popular the site is, and
more.

Think of it as a smart brain that picks the best answers for your question.

4. Search Interface – Where You Type

 The search interface is the place where you type your question or keywords.

 It’s the screen you see when you go to Google, Bing, or Yahoo.

 You type your query, click “search,” and the engine shows you results.

It’s like the search box where you ask a question.

How It All Works Together:

1. You type your question into the search interface

2. The crawler visits and collects info from websites.

3. That info is saved in the index.

4. The algorithm sorts and ranks the best results.

5. You get answers!

8. EFFECTIVE SEARCH TECHNIQUES

1. Using AND – Narrows Your Search

 When you use AND, you are telling the computer to show results that include both
words.
 Example:
cats AND dogs
➤ This will show pages that talk about both cats and dogs.
Use AND when you want results with more than one idea together.
2. Using OR – Broadens Your Search
 When you use OR, you are telling the computer to show results with either word.
 Example:
cats OR dogs
➤ This will show pages that talk about either cats or dogs (or both).
Use OR when you want to see more options.
3. Using NOT – Excludes Words
 When you use NOT, you are telling the computer to remove a word from your
search.
 Example:
cats NOT dogs
➤ This will show pages about cats only, and leave out anything about dogs.
Use NOT when you want to avoid certain topics.

4. Search Order – Most Important Words First

 When you search, write the main keywords first.
 Example:
Instead of typing: "I want to know how solar energy works"
Type: solar energy working
Search engines give more attention to the first words.

5. Search Phrases – Use Quotes (" ")

 Use quotation marks around phrases to find exact matches.
 Example:
“solar energy”
➤ This will only show pages with the exact phrase solar energy, not just “solar”
or “energy” alone.
Use quotes to find specific phrases or names.
6. Keyword Searching – Use Main Terms Only
 Don’t type full questions. Just use the important words.
 Example:
Instead of: "What are the benefits of solar energy?"
Type: benefits solar energy
Short and clear keywords work best!
