Skill 1 LAB - Vanessa Oliva and Jocelyn Cadena

Part 1: Pick semester skill + classify it (Pairs)

Throwing a ball with dominant hand (right hand)
Classification:
- Primary outcome measure, Gross, Open, Discrete, Self-paced

Part 2: Learner Profile

The learner is a novice and had no formal training throwing a ball with their non-dominant hand.
The learner has never played any sports due to being scared of failing and the embarrassment
of not being able to go through with throwing a ball correctly. What success will look like for the
learner in 4-6 weeks is being able to throw a ball, but still has some difficulty with hand-eye
coordination.

Part 3: Identify the FIRST subskill (“teachable chunk”) (Pairs)

1. Stand how you regularly would with both legs shoulder width apart. Take a step forward
with your left leg while at the same time diagonally moving your upper body to the right
side.
2. Standing in the position you left off, move your right shoulder and arm back at an angle
3. Then bring forward with your right leg as you are also moving your right arm forward to
throw
4. Then follow through completely with throwing the ball straight ahead
Part 4: Create success criteria
1) Outcome: The learner is able to throw the ball at their target
2) Movement: The learner’s elbow was at an angle, legs are shoulder width apart, and they
are able to take a step with their left foot to get into the initial position, and lastly they
were able to finish with the follow through.
Part 5: Quick baseline (Pods of 4; observe only)
First Learner:
- Her outcome is a 10/10 since she hit the target.
- She did 5 reps and she was able to do a follow through.
- Her elbow was at an angle.
- There was a slight issue with stepping forward with her right foot.
- Overall, she did great!
Second Learner:
- 5 reps.
- Her outcome was 10/10.
- She was able to follow through with every single important step when it comes down to
throwing a ball at a target. There was a slight issue with remembering what foot to start
with but besides that everything was great!
